FAFSA = Free Application for Federal Student Aid
For most students planning to attend college or career school, financial aid is essential. Federal Student Aid, an Office of the U.S. Dept. of Education, helps make a college education possible for every dedicated mind by providing more than $150 billion each year in grants, loans, & work-study funds.
There are three different types of financial aid you can be awarded. Grants: You do NOT need to pay this back because it is a gift (an easy way to remember is "G" grants = gift). Loans: Borrowed money for college or career school; your loans must be repaid with interest. Work-Study: A federal work program through which undergraduates and graduate students at participating schools earn money to help pay for school.
In order to apply, you will need to enter the information on the previous year's federal taxes. The amount you receive in Grant funds depends on the information you provide at the time of the FAFSA application. TYPICALLY, if you qualify for free and reduced lunch, then there is a higher chance that you will qualify for the FULL Pell Grant (Gift). In 2019- 2020, the average dollar amount of the FAFSA award was over $6,000!!!! This could be your gift!
Here is a very brief overview of the process: 1. You fill out the FAFSA, 2. the government/FAFSA sends info to the schools you list on your application, 3. The school offers you a financial aid package (this is where we can see how much they are willing to give you).

Here is the link to start or finish your FAFSA: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
If you’re starting for the first time on the myStudentAid mobile app, you will select “START HERE” on the FAFSA tile, select your role, and then enter your FSA ID. You cannot fill out the FAFSA form on the mobile app without an FSA ID.
The following tips apply whether you’re filling out the form online or on the mobile app:
Near the beginning of the application, you’ll create a “save key,” a temporary password that you’ll use if you start your FAFSA form, save it without finishing it, then want to open it again later to finish it. One benefit of the save key is that students and parents can use this function to access the FAFSA form if they are completing the application in separate locations. (Unlike with the FSA ID, which needs to be kept private, it’s okay to tell your parent what your save key is.)
If you’re a male between the ages of 18 and 25 and you haven’t registered with the Selective Service System, select “Yes” when you’re asked if you would like to be registered. Otherwise, you won’t be eligible to receive federal student aid. This requirement applies to any person assigned the sex of male at birth.
Listing Colleges and/or Career Schools: While completing the FAFSA form, you must list at least one school to receive your information. The schools you list will use your FAFSA information to determine the types and amounts of aid you may receive.
