Reading That Counts
When thinking about literacy, it is common people might think just about the functional reading of traditional texts. While this is certainly still a core component when it comes to literacy, it is critical that we now support students' development of media literacy, digital literacy, transliteracy, and multiliteracies.
To start, this site has some resources for two types of reading that are commonly questioned in terms of "counting" as reading for school:
The idea behind Reading Revolution is that students do (or will do) a lot of reading, but it is often not seen, valued, supported, and celebrated in formal educational settings.
When educators are open to different types of reading that are relevant to students, we can help support literacy skills that are transferable to curricular goals and in a way that increases student engagement.
