Since 1974 the Valhalla Swim and Dive program has been competitively competing in the Grossmont League and CIF San Diego section since 1974. With numerous league championships, CIF championships, and even olympians - Valhalla Swim and Dive has a lot to offer to each student-athlete who comes to participate in our growing program.
Head Coach
Steena has been a member of the Valhalla High School Swim and Dive coaching staff since 2007. Steena dedicated 11 years of coaching to the JV program before stepping into the varsity position in 2018. Outside of Valhalla, Steena spent many years coaching for Heartland Swimming Association as the head coach of the Junior Gold Program and as the Summer League Coordinator. Steena is a special education teacher at Valhalla and earned her undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of San Diego. When not coaching Steena enjoys spending time working on her photography and near the water - paddle boarding, open water swimming, and sailing. Steena and her husband welcomed their first baby to their family last March. Steena is an alumnus of Valhalla High School, class of 2006.
Varsity Coach
Coach Wall joined the Valhalla High School staff in 2022 as a PE Coach. With over a decade of coaching experience, this is his first season with us at Valhalla Swim. Coach Wall swam competitively in his youth and through his high school at Rocklin High School outside of Sacramento. He continued his aquatics career at San Diego State University playing collegiate water polo. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing and playing basketball, as well as hanging out with his friends and his golden retriever, Lenny.
Volunteer Coach
Coach Houston has been a staple in the Valhalla Aquatics community for decades. Although in retirement, Coach Houston has been a major supporter of all aquatics programs over the years and continues to help with the swimming and diving program. Coach Houston was inducted into the San Diego County Coaches Hall of Fame in 2023. He carries 8 CIF championship titles and 12 CIF runner-up titles. Kent grew up playing water polo and swimming while living abroad in Guam. In his spare time, he loves to spend time with his dogs and working in his garden.
JV Coach
Brett Newmyer grew up in Chula Vista and swam competitively for South Bay Aquatics and Bonita Vista High School. She has lived up and down the California coast, spending the most amount of time in Santa Cruz. She has also lived in Santa Barbara and the Ventura area. When she isn’t working, she enjoys spending time with her family, trying her hand at film photography, and watching movies. Brett also works on-campus as Valhalla's SST.
Administrative Coach
Jessica has been with the Valhalla Swim & Dive program since 2010. As an alumnus of Grossmont High School, Jessica was a distinguished distance swimmer. Her participation in club swimming as an adolescent helped her learn her true love for the sport. Jessica has helped out in a variety of roles for Heartland Swimming Association. Jessica is married and has a son, Wyatt - a future swimmer! Jessica enjoys hiking, spending time outdoors, and being with her extended family.
