The main way people get it is from the sun, but you can also get it from foods like wild caught salmon, and tuna.(Esposito,2008) But its really hard to get enough from food alone, its recommended that you get 10-15 minutes of direct sunlight a day without protection; It is also important to chose the correct time of day since "If your shadow is longer than your body height, you can't make any vitamin D"(Holick), the desired time is from 10 a.m to 3 p.m.(Esposito,2008) A common symptom is fatigue but that is a delightful effect compared to the long term possibilities. A study was done where vitamin D levels were taken of people who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The study found that over the span of five and a half years people with a vitamin D deficiency had a 31% increased chance of developing colorectal cancer.
