We have had a great few weeks in 2B. The kid are all working really hard. Here are a few of our highlights:
LA - Phonics - We will be working through a similar program as grade 1, UFLI. This program is a systematic and explicit phonics program. I will be sending home some phonics materials in a black duotang each week; it will most likely come on Fridays. I will include a decodable passage, a roll and read with good words to practice, and a weekly check in to show your child's understanding of the pattern of the week. I ask that you get your child to read one or many of the pages to you. Practicing the learned phonics skills repeatedly will help your child build his/her fluency skills (reading accurately, at a good pace, using expression). Please send it back to school the following week before Wednesday. We have been reviewing short vowel sounds. This week we are working on short vowel words that include a beginning and ending blend.
LA - Writing - Every Monday morning, the kids will write a journal entry. They can write about what they choose. It can be about something they want to tell me about the weekend, about a book read, TV show watched, etc. If you have time at breakfast or on the way to school, ask your child what he/she wants to write about.
Math - We worked on some math review from grade one, got logged into a program called REFLEX (math fact practice), and learned a couple new math games. Soon, we will start a short patterning unit.
Art - We have worked on a few projects in September. I will share photos of them when all of the verification forms are filled out. BTW: Please ensure that your forms are filled out ASAP. These forms must be done for your child to participate in the Terry Fox Walk happening on Friday.
PE - We have been working on physical fitness, cooperative games, and being safe in the gym.
Chromebooks - We are so lucky to get our very own Chromebooks to use this year. So far, we have mostly used them to listen to reading and to practice math facts. The kids did do some typing to create a document for an art project.
Bubblegum Draw - We had our first draw on the 11th. We will do this every two weeks. The kids have a bubblegum machine on their desks. When we see good things happening, we color in a circle. When it's full, their name gets put in a bubblegum machine. I pick about seven names on draw day.
My blog post generally consists of some highlights, some photos from the week, and reminders. I try to keep my posts brief. however, I do invite you to contact me if you ever want more information about something. As a parent, I sometimes found long emails and blog posts overwhelming. I love to give you an idea of what we're up to with photos.
Home Reading
My home reading program is quite simple. If your child spends at least 10-15 minutes sitting down to read, with or without you, initial the date in his/her agenda (see the calendar page below). At the end of each month, I total up the days and color in bubblegums on the machines that the kids have on their desks. You do not have to write down what your child reads.
At this time, I will not be sending books home. If your child does not have any reading materials at home, please let me know and we can make other arrangements. Over the next couple of weeks, I will be sending home reading materials for particular students to supplement the phonics instruction that is happening in class; I will contact you if I feel like your child will benefit from this extra practice. Let me know if you have any questions.
Please check out the Principal's Corner for infomation such as fundraising, milk, verification forms, and the Terry Fox Campaign.
Please ensure that all library books are sent back to school by Thursday morning. We head to go see Mrs. Spence right after morning recess that day.
