Happy Halloween from 1B!

Thanks to a nutrition grant, Mr. Coffin made spooky smoothies for us to enjoy! What a yummy treat!

Numeracy

Storytime: Spookly the Square Pumpkin

Shape pumpkins

Student practiced subitizing, comparing numbers, and tally marks during this simple math game with dice. Beat that!

In this game, students subitized numbers on ten-frames and practiced writing number words.

Zero the Hero came to celebrate the 20 day of school!

Science

Dancing corn

Students loved this experiment! You can try it at home with a few kitchen items: popcorn seeds, vinegar, baking soda, water, jar.

1B students, like scientists, used science process skills during the Dancing Corn experiment. First, they drew a prediction of what they thought might happen, they observed what happened during the experiment, and then they communicated what they observed by drawing what they saw.

Celebrating the change of season!

Indigenous Learning

Walking fieldtrip to the Devon Medicine Healing Grounds. Led my Mr. Swampy, our indigenous lead, students did a land acknowledgement and song, and learned about medicinal and ceremonial plants such as sage and sweetgrass. Students found a sit spot to reflect in nature for a few moments, then Mr. Swampy taught us a traditional game called Run and Scream. Exactly as it sounds, the indigenous warriors played this game to help them build up their lung capacity.

Social Studies

Students have been learning about groups we belong to, big and small. Students did drawings of their families (small) in red to create a flag of our country (big). We also did pictures of our families using leaves we collected outside.

Happy THanksgiving from 1B!
