What's New?

May 3rd, 2022

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all doing well. I can't believe that we only have about 2 months left of school! It truly has been a great year and I am so excited for all of the festivities that the end of the year tends to bring.

Here is a quick summary of what we are doing in class:

FLA: In FLA, we are continuing to practice our narrative and letter writing. Throughout the past few weeks, we have been working hard preparing for the FLA Part A. PAT on May 16th! In the upcoming two weeks, we will be doing a lot of practice to make sure that the kids are ready to go and for them to feel confident in their own abilities to write. I am so proud of all of their progress this year!

ELA: After completing our Pixar group writing assignment, the kids used their new knowledge to write some pretty incredible stories. The ELA Part A. PAT will be on May 18th and they will be asked to write a newspaper article and a story. Like the FLA preparation, we are continuing to practice every day so they are prepped and ready to go for the big day.

Math: In Math, we just finished our Area, Perimeter and Volume unit. We are nearing the end of the Math 6 curriculum, as we only have 2 or 3 mini-units to complete. Understanding all of the concepts and procedures are extremely important leading up to June. If your child has trouble with multiplying and dividing decimals (or other concepts), it is strongly recommended to practice at home for the next few months. I will continue to work 1 on 1 with those who have some trouble. Always here to help!

Social Studies: In Social Studies, we are on the last unit of the year. After learning about the provincial and municipal governments, we are now moving on to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms unit. As said earlier, it is recommended to start reviewing some of these concepts at home to ensure that the kids have a full grasp of what they need to know for the end of the year.

Science: This week, we will be finishing up our Evidence and Investigation unit and then we will be continuing with the Trees and Forests unit sometime next week. This will be the last unit of the year. The kids will be learning about the parts of a tree, why they are important for several purposes, the food web and more.

Once again, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send me an email or call the school.

All the best,

M. Baulkham

Additional information

PAT Schedule and Information

With the Provincial Achievement Tests on the horizon, it is of the most importance that everyone works their hardest in the last two months of the year. It is the expectation that each student is working on numeracy and literacy skills (e.g. reviewing concepts, reading, writing, etc.) every night at home for at least ten minutes. I do not usually give a lot of homework, however, this expectation of working on these skills has been stressed throughout the year. A great way to practice is using the Quest A+ website. Here is a link: Quest A+ (Grade 6)

If you would like additional information of PATs, check out this parent guide here: PAT Parent Guide (2021-2022).

Hot Lunch

Hot lunch is back! Please go to healthyhunger.ca to sign up your child for lunches.

We are having Hot Lunch on Fridays, Thursdays if there is a PD day, with no Hot Lunch on the week before May Long. We have the next two weeks ready to go (McDonalds and Nitza's Pizzas) with the rest to come very soon. Healthyhunger.ca allows us as parents to order up to 5 days before the lunch. So 5 days prior to the Lunch, the program will no longer let you order. If you are having issues with the website, please email nicohl.walker@gmail.com.

Mental Health Week

This week we are participating in Mental Health week. Each day we will be participating in activities that help each student with issues related to mental illness. I am an avid believer in supporting mental health and I am so happy that I can share some wellness activites with your kids. If you would like additional resources for helping with mental illness at home, please let me know.

Spell-a-thon

WOW! We collected $11,436 dollars for the 2022 Spell-a-thon! The support and the hard work from the kids are very much appreciated. These funds will go towards buying the school new resources and technology, like Chromebooks or tablets. Way to go, Cougars!
