Developing Math Literacy Strategy

A cross curricular way to bridge the gap between language and math. Math Read Alouds support math vocabulary, thinking and reasoning through story (Div 1-2).

Environmental Patterns Strategy

This strategy provides multiple experiences, on an ongoing basis, with repeating patterns in a variety of forms. It develops the students ability to recognize, identify, and describe patterns in their environment (Div 1-2).

Identifying & Collecting Like Terms

This is an activity that generates Math Talks, Open Questioning, Develops literacy, and is easily differentiated to individual students' understanding and readiness. Students learn to separate a variety of objects into similar groups (identify like terms). Students learn to collect like terms into one group of each type (collect and simplify like terms) (Div 3).

Increasing Patterns

This strategy provides experience for describing pattern rules for concrete increasing patterns presented in a variety of ways (Div 1-2).

My Favourite Mistake

A 2 minute exercise at the start of class that helps teachers see where students are at in the learning. This strategy can act as a formative assessment of students’ prior knowledge, as an extension of newly introduced concepts, or as review of past concepts throughout the course (Div 3).

Open Questions: Expressions vs Equations

Open ended questions are framed in such a way that a variety of responses or approaches are possible. One strategy for creating open questions is to ask for similarities and differences between two items (Div 3).

Pattern Hunters Strategy

Students make connections and find patterns within content related to different patterns within the learning outcome through their use of a graphic organizer (Div 1-2).
