All students and staff in BGSD have an educational Google Gmail account that is managed by BGSD. The Google Apps for Education environment (GAFE) gives students access to a word processor, presentation program, spreadsheets, drawing programs and a multitude of other online tools. Because these tools are cloud based students can gain access to them anyplace they have an internet connection, anyplace anytime access.
Common questions about Google Apps - GAFE
For students that do not have a device at home BGSD can access computers for schools who will provide a desktop or laptop for families through a school request. BGSD also provides chromebooks for students for free, ones that have been removed from management once the educational licence expires. If you have a student with special needs or financial limitations we can apply for a computer on your behalf, please contact ray.mccubbing@blackgold.ca if you have any questions about this program.
All classrooms in BGSD use chromebooks. These are relatively inexpensive devices that leverage cloud computing for common tasks such as word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, etc. Many stores sell chromebooks for both private and educational use, a google email account is all that is needed. BGSD is working toward a 1:1 environment for all students in grades 4 - 12. When this is achieved access to devices will become ubiquitous. A BYOD personal device will not be needed, however, it may be advantageous to have access outside of regular class time, for this a personal chromebook would be recommended.
Staples in Leduc sells chromebooks for education and also extended warranties for the device. Please contact the store for the latest prices.
Note: Chromebooks do have an Auto Update Policy whereby they no longer receive updates. The life of the product is determined by Google. Generally chromebooks are valid for 7 years if purchased the year that it was released. There are old chromebooks being sold as new that have a far shorter lifespan.
Teachers in grades 4 - 8 do have the ability to directly manage the chromebooks in their classrooms with software. This helps keep student on task and safe from internet manipulation. Many times parents struggle to have the same ability with internet in their home. The majority of service providers do offer controls for home internet and filtering. Telus as an example has the Telus connect app where the homeowner is able to manage all devices connected to the home wifi. Parents can monitor their child's time spent on their personal technology and even restrict access at any time. Apps such as Google Family Link (Android) can help create a conversation around appropriate technology use.
