Feeling Puzzled?
Your School Counselor Can Help!
If you have concerns about your child's behavior or mental health that you would like to discuss, please email me at beck.sherri@cusd80.com. I will set up a time to talk to you by phone and assist you in finding interventions and/or community resources.
Individual Counseling:
Individual counseling is available to all students. Typical counseling issues in elementary school may include topics such as anxiety, divorce, grief, anger management, social skills and friendship. Individual counseling in the school setting is intended to be brief. Students are typically not seen by the counselor for more than five sessions. Mrs. Beck practices Solution-Focused Brief Therapy which focuses on student strengths. She assists students in forming developmentally appropriate plans to meet their own counseling goals. If parents or teachers would like to refer a student to the school counselor you can click here to complete this online referral School Counseling Referral Form.
Group Counseling:
Small group counseling is offered when multiple students present with a similar counseling issue. Groups normally contain six or less students of similar ages. Typical group topics may include grief, social skills, anger management, self-esteem, and divorce.
Classroom Guidance:
Mrs. Beck teaches guidance lessons in classrooms throughout the year. Classroom guidance lessons last for approximately 30 minutes and topics vary by grade level. All topics address the American School Counselor Association National Standards.
Consultation:
Mrs. Beck is available to consult with school staff, parents, and community agencies. Sometimes it is necessary to refer families to community agencies if a child could benefit from more intensive counseling services. Mrs. Beck is happy to help your child find the resources that he or she needs to be successful.
Coordination:
Mrs. Beck coordinates the Multi-Tier System of Supports at Basha Elementary. MTSS helps teachers develop classroom interventions for students who are struggling academically and/or behaviorally. She also coordinates 504 plans and the CogAt testing for the gifted department.
What does a School Counselor do?
School counselors are educational professionals who assist students in the areas of personal/social, academic and career development. School counselors provide large group classroom instruction in each of these areas. In addition, school counselors work with students individually and in small groups. School counselors help students through the ups and downs of life. They help students learn how to express their feelings and become effective personal problem solvers. School counselors support every student and staff member at the school so that students have what they need to succeed!
How can my child work with the School Counselor?
If your student needs to see the school counselor he or she may tell their teacher that they would like to see the school counselor, and their teacher can set up an appointment. Parents may make referrals to the school counselor as well. Parents are invited to complete a school counselor referral form if they feel their student is in need of assistance from the school counselor. Parents may also make referrals through phone calls or email.
How are School Counselors different from Licensed Professional Counselors?
Some school counselors are also licensed professional counselors. However, licensed professional counselors have additional credentials that allow them to operate a counseling practice outside of the school setting. Mrs. Beck is not a licensed professional counselor, but is a certified PreK-12 school counselor, as well as a certified K-8 teacher. School counselors are trained to provide short-term counseling for problems that are often interfering with a student's learning in the school setting. Licensed professional counselors can offer longer treatment plans for a wide variety of issues that may be impacting students and families at school and at home. If you believe your child needs assistance from a counselor, school counselors are often a good place to start. They can work with your child, and if they feel more intensive therapy would be helpful, they can assist you in finding a licensed professional counselor. Although, Mrs. Beck does not endorse any particular counselors she does provide a list of community resources available in the area. Parents are also encouraged to check with their private insurance for support.
