Service Learning@ICSA

Hello everyone, here at ICSA, we love helping others. We have two main things to help others. Service Learning, and MLK Day (Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service).

Service Learning

Here, at ICSA, we started doing something called Service Learning. It is different from community service. The goal is to work with the people and other kids in community - not just to give them things. It is also for us to learn from them, too.

We have to investigate to know their goals and what they want to do. Then we have to plan for what we can do. Then after we plan then we can do the action. Then we have to reflect on the whole thing. Then we have to demonstrate what we did. We did a Celebration Fair and we gave the best helpers Candle.Some of us in this class are doing the after school service activities.

There are different things like "Trash to Treasure", teaching other children how to speak English with a group called "English and Education for You," and read, going to take care of children in orphanages, etc..

I'm interviewing a girl in my grade doing service learning. Her name is Jewel.

Me- What are doing for Service Learning ?

Jewel- I'm doing Trash to Treasure

What do you do in Trash to Treasure

We collect plastic bottles to make a wall for a poor orphanage.

Yeah I love it, I like working with other people, and having fun

SO, what are you doing for service learning?

I'm doing SOS village.

What do you do in that?

We help other kids with all types of things.

Such as...

Teaching them how to speak English, and read.

OK, thank you.

Finally, I will interview Marina.

SO what are you doing for service learning?

I was gardening.

For what ?

To help our country get more trees. We went to plant them somewhere in Abidjan in desperate need of plants.

MLK Day of Service

Here at ICSA, we celebrate Martin Luther King Day ( MLK day ) with a Day of Service. We love helping others, and this year, we're doing different topics based on the Sustainable Development Goals.

My friend Charity, is in a group working on "Zero Hunger". I interviewed her to ask her about this:

Me- Hey Charity, I'm doing an interview for your opinions on MLK Day. So, do you like what we're doing to help others ?

Charity- I'm glad to be helping people. I'm very sad that some people don't have as much food as us.

Me - What do you guys talk about in your group ?

Well we're trying to find a way so that there's less people who are hungry in this world.

Hey, so what are you doing for MLK Day?

I'm doing Gender Equality. I believe girls are just as strong as boys !

Oh how interesting, I'm doing that too. We could show pictures of some of our conversations. But we'll do that after. Now, what do you think about MLK Day ?

I think that this school is improving, because this is a very awesome idea to help other people. I love helping others!
