Blue Biotechnology

Blue Biotechnology can be simply defined as:-

the use of aquatic organisms (or their body parts) to increase seafood production; to develop products, medicines: pharmaceutical drugs, antibiotics and vaccines etc.

The different purposes for which it is used are-

• Preserving marine species.

• Restoring marine wildlife.

• Engineering plants which are resistant to environmental conditions from the genes of marine organisms.

Interaction with other sports in Asia, aquaculture (breeding of aquatic organisms, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans and aquatic plants) is now spreading to all continents, covering all aquatic environments and the use of the entire range of aquatic species. Activities that were mostly small, non-profit and within the family now include large-scale commercial and industrial production of valuable fish that are traded at the national, environmental and international levels. Rapid aquaculture growth has benefited from both traditional technologies and biotechnology. It is expected that modern biotechnology will further promote the development of this sector in meeting the global demand for water food in the coming decades. Aquaculture, in comparison with livestock or agriculture, is a new production system in many developing and developed countries. Although biotechnologies are used in fisheries management, their application is very limited compared to aquaculture applications.

MARINE TECHNOLOGY

Researches focus mainly on marine bio-medicine and drug discovery with an emphasis on cancer and infectious and inflammatory Diseases."centre for marine biotechnology and bio-medicine"(CMBB)scientists discovering the properties of deep sea marine microbes to the genetic engineering of commercially viable marine animals.these researches found many natural drugs this also plays a major role in the securing of human health. some examples are marine derived anti cancer drugs, painkillers, cosmetics, etc. Research in pharmacological properties of marine natural products had led to the discovery of many worthy clinical applications.

Today, marine technology has the highest probability of making natural products with carbon skeletons and other biological activities. Researches also found many new species in marine technology. Marine plants, animals and other organisms will be more useful for yielding new products and medicines will be important to future.

This following article is about Applications of Blue biotechnology.

Freeze Resistant Fish:Recombinant technique can be used to transfer an antifreeze protein [ATP] GENE to confer freeze resistant on various species.ATP are produced by several cold water marine teleosts like winter foulde r,ocean pou t,sea raven, shorthorn sculpin. These protien prevent ice crystal formation in blood and hence protect the fish in freezing.

Agar-Agar:It is commonly extracted from red weeds like gelidium and gracilaria .Agar contains two important components -AGAROSE AND AGROPECTIN,which make the agar compounds extremely useful for paper manufacturing, culture media, preservation of food stuffs and packaging leather dairy and cosmetic industries.
