CKopter-1, a name derived from the combination of N(CK)U and ornith(opter), was the first bio-inspired flying prototype developed in the MARSlab. This innovative project represents the inaugural venture into bio-inspired flight research by the lab's initial cohort of students. As a pioneering effort, Prototype01 will serve as a foundational tool for studying the flight dynamics and characteristics of bio-inspired flying robots, providing crucial insights for future advancements in this field. The recording speed was 3000fps.

The Spoonbill UAV was an early student-led UAV project carried out from 2007 to 2012 at the Remotely Piloted Vehicle & Micro Satellite Research Laboratory (RMRL), which was established in 1985. The project was supervised by the late Prof. Fei-Bin Hsiao, with project execution led by Prof. Woei-Leong Chan, in close collaboration with Dr. Chi-Seng Li, both of whom were then postgraduate students. It was among the first UAVs in Taiwan designed and built by a student team with an endurance of more than one hour, covering the full development process from aircraft design, fabrication, avionics integration, flight testing, and mission operation. A key milestone was the 2009 Penghu mission, in which Spoonbill UAV completed a long-distance over-water flight from Cigu, Tainan toward Dongji Island, Penghu, demonstrating its endurance, navigation capability, and system reliability. This formative project shaped Prof. Chan’s later work in unmanned aerial systems and remains an important example of MARSlab’s philosophy: building real flying systems, validating ideas through experiments, and training students through hands-on aerospace engineering.

The SWAN UAV was an early UAV project at the Remotely Piloted Vehicle & Micro Satellite Research Laboratory (RMRL), active from 2002 to 2008. SWAN stands for Surveillance, Watch, Autonomous Flight, and Navigation capability, reflecting the project’s focus on real-time monitoring, autonomous flight, and mission-oriented UAV operation. It was the first UAV project in which Prof. Woei-Leong Chan became involved, marking the beginning of his long-term work in unmanned aerial systems. In 2005, the SWAN team attempted an autonomous cross-sea flight from Pingtung to Liuqiu Island. During the mission, a midair anomaly was detected through remote sensing and telemetry monitoring, allowing the team to safely return the aircraft. Although the cross-sea flight was not completed as originally planned, the mission demonstrated the value of real-time remote sensing, flight monitoring, and safety-oriented mission decision-making in UAV operations. The SWAN project became an important foundation for later student-led UAV developments, including the Spoonbill UAV, and helped shape the experimental, system-oriented approach that continues in MARSlab today.
