Math Games
What makes a good math game?
Choice! In what to do while playing. Strategy helps with engaged and problem solving. Discourse can happen when students explain their choices.
Math Should be the Engine! Math shouldn’t be the work you do just to have fun - think online games. Games should help students to get better at math and in turn they get better at the game.
Simple to use and quick to play! You never have enough time to plan, prep, or play.
Connections! between Concrete, Representational, and Abstract models
Best practices when using games:
Discourse is essential. Teach and expect students to think aloud as they play. Play with them. Include time during debrief for them to share connections.
Consider how too differentiate by adding larger dice, changing the operation, expanding the numbers.
Build fluency not memorization
Consider using recording sheets for connections and accountability
