This STEM exploration is from the book Hands-On STEAM for Young Learners. The popular nursery rhyme 5 Speckled Frogs is used as a fun way to introduce young learners to the concept of buoyancy. In this activity, students will explore the scientific concept of sink and float. This lesson is perfect for teachers because it requires very few materials that are easy to collect and inexpensive to purchase. You need water, toy frogs, or small stones to represent the frogs and aluminum foil. That’s it. If you want to include other materials like straws, or duct tape, you can, but it isn’t necessary. It's perfect for kids because it’s engaging! Sing the song, let them pretend to jump in the pond, and then introduce the STEM challenge provided in this free resource.
Next, the students will be encouraged to think critically and creatively as they design and test their foil boat. I have also used this activity numerous times as a family event. Families LOVE building boats and testing their designs together. It’s a beautiful way to pair literacy and STEM.
