Grinnell High School Counseling Department

Mission

The Grinnell-Newburg School Counselor's Mission is to provide a comprehensive, developmental, counseling program addressing the academic, career and social/emotional development of all students. By partnering with teachers, administrators, parents, and the entire community, as directed by the ASCA National Model, the school counseling program will help students identify their interests, abilities, and strengths, while enhancing their dependability, self-expression/control, and conflict-resolution skills along with other competencies that will remediate students’ deficits and strengthen their unique capabilities.

Philosophy & Beliefs

Counselors at Grinnell Newburg Community School District believe that all students have dignity and worth, all students have the right to participate in the school counseling program and that all students K-12 shall have access to full-time, state-certified school counselors to deliver the counseling program.

The Grinnell Newburg Community School District Counseling program will be planned, coordinated and managed by a school counseling team in conjunction with other schools, parents, or guardians and community representatives. It will be comprehensive in scope, developmental in design and preventative in nature. This includes facilitating work in academic, career, and personal/social domains; and will use data to drive program development, direction, and evaluation including activities targeting under-served student populations.

All counselors in the Grinnell Newburg Community School District will be student-focused and driven by the desire to know and work with all students to help them become more productive members of society, participate in professional development activities essential to maintaining a quality school counseling program, and abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association.

Vision Statement

Every student will acquire the academic, career and social/emotional skills to reach their fullest educational potential and successfully manage their lives as healthy, responsible, competent and productive citizens who respect themselves and others.
