Planets are the largest objects in the Solar System after the Sun. They are objects that rotate around the Sun. There are eight planets. Four of the planets closest to the Sun are the inner planets and are rocky. The four planets farthest from the Sun are considered to be gas giants because they are made up of gas. There used to be nine planets until 2006. Pluto was the ninth planet. It was demoted to the status of a Dwarf Planet.
According to Rachel Martin on Morning Edition of National Public Radio on March 22, 2017 the debate to make Pluto a planet again continues. It was demoted to a Dwarf Planet in 2006. Now, United States scientists at a conference in Texas are arguing that Pluto, and 110 other bodies in our Solar System, should be labeled as planets. Only time will tell what happens to Pluto.
These planets are part of the solar system. They rotate around the sun at different times. This chart explains the amount of time. Venus has the longest rotation. Jupiter and Venus have the fastest at only 10 hours.
