COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course prepares students for success in college-level courses, including (but not limited to) calculus and other mathematics courses. By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of algebra and functions. You will apply algebraic concepts and procedures at higher conceptual levels, including trigonometry. You will focus on modeling and solving real-world problems. The topics, concepts, and procedures covered are used in science, engineering, medicine, and business. You will develop logical thinking skills that are used in every discipline and beyond.
MATERIALS:
• Calculator. A graphing calculator is required; instruction will be from a TI-84 and is recommended for the students.
• All work must be completed in pencil and must look professional.
• A 3-ring binder to organize notes and assignments.
• Notebook paper and graph paper (optional).
REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES:
• Behavior: Follow all rules and requirements listed in the GMC student handbook. • Preparation: Come to class each day, on time and prepared (with all materials required for that day). • Absences: Students may have five absences for the entire year; unexcused absences in excess of five will result in no credit for the class. If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to make up any missed work. • Productivity: Use class time to focus on the work and learning, and complete assignments as they are assigned.
• Cell Phones: Phones must be kept in the “Cell Phone Day Care” during class. They may only be used with explicit instruction from Mr. Frans.
• Late Work: Complete and submit work on time. Late work will only receive partial credit according to the late work policy stated in the student handbook.
• Honesty: Students are responsible for the integrity of their work. Copying work and cheating will not be tolerated.
• Office Hours: Mr. Harrelson’s office hours are on Thursdays from 3-4 pm and otherwise by appointment. Students are encouraged to seek additional help during these hours. In the event of a major grade below 80, students will be given the opportunity to retest (please see the handbook for more information). • Parent Portal: Parents will be able to follow students’ progress by checking grades on the Parent Portal. Please check students’ grades regularly, and do not hesitate to contact Mr. Frans at
jfrans@greermiddlecollege.org with concerns.
• Google Classroom: Refer to your google classroom page for all details regarding announcements, notes, assignments, and due dates. A link will be provided to all students on the first day of class to join the google classroom page.
GRADING SCALE: (SC Grading Scale)
A: 100-90
B: 89-80
C: 79-70 *No course credit will be given for final grades below 80.
D: 69-60
F: 59-0
COURSE ASSIGNMENTS:
• 60% Tests/Projects: Students will be given a final assessment on each unit. These assessments will consist of Tests, Projects, or a combination of the two. A study guide will be provided for every test and a rubric for every project.
• 40% Classwork/Quizzes: Quizzes will be given throughout each unit. Classwork consists of activities and assignments that are required to be completed during class.
