Geometry with Statistics Course Syllabus

Course Description
Geometry with Statistics (GS) is a newly designed course that builds on the students’ experiences in the
middle grades. It is the first of four required courses in high school mathematics, providing a common
Grade 9 experience for all students entering high school-level mathematics. GS builds essential concepts
necessary for students to meet their post-secondary goals (whether they pursue additional study or enter
the workforce), to function as effective citizens, and to recognize the wonder, joy, and beauty of
mathematics (NCTM, 2018). It is important because it develops mathematical knowledge and skills
through visual representations prior to the more abstract development of algebra. Beginning high school
mathematics with GS in ninth grade offers students the opportunity to build their reasoning and
sensemaking skills, see the applicability of mathematics, and prepare more effectively for further studies
in algebra. The course also focuses on statistics in analyzing data, which provides students with tools to
describe, show, and summarize data in the world around them.
Classroom Rules:
1.) Be on-time, on-task, and prepared to learn everyday.
2.) Keep all personal electronics put away (the ENTIRE time).
3.) Be responsible for your own learning.
4.) Respect the teacher, the classroom, and other students.
5.) Clean up after yourself and your peers.
6.) Follow all school rules and policies as outlined in your student agenda handbook.
Classroom Procedures:
● Have your homework and all materials ready to go when the bell rings. You should be working on
your bell ringer or assignment posted on the board.
● Our class will follow the consequences for tardiness listed on page 7 of the handbook.
● Ask to go to the restroom at an appropriate time.
● After an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to get missed work. This is a one-unit course so
students cannot miss more than 5 days. Further description of the school attendance policy is
listed on page 11 of the handbook.
● Retests should be taken the following Friday after attending office hours.

Outlined in the student handbook on pages 9-11.
Important Dates & Upcoming Assignments
I post quiz and test dates on the whiteboard in class and on google classroom, along with verbal
reminders. You are responsible for knowing what is upcoming. An occasional pop quiz can occur at any
time during a class (will always be open notes).
Materials:
3 ring binder (1 inch), 10 dividers, a few colored pens, highlighter, paper, TI-83, TI-84, or scientific
calculator

90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
60-69 D
0-59 F
*To receive credit for a course at GMC, a student must complete instructional requirements at the mastery
level (80 or above).
* NO EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE GIVEN.
Grade Allocations
o 40% Minor Grades (quizzes)
o 60% Major Grades (tests & projects)
The midterm exam will count as 10% of the first semester grade. The final exam counts as 10% of the
course grade.
● Grades will be updated regularly in PowerSchool.
Office Hours Smart Center
Thursdays Monday-Thursday
● All of these supports are offered from 3-4 PM.
As outlined in the student handbook, all test grades below an 80 can be retaken. Students must come
to office hours in order to retake the test. The original test will count as 30% and the retake test will
count as 70% for the new grade. Minor assignments cannot be retaken.
