American Literature
COURSE DESCRIPTION
English III:
In English III, students will think critically about texts as they relate to the human condition and the American Experience. The focus of this course will be developing a critical and analytical understanding of the evolution of the American Experience as displayed through literature, poetry, and informational texts. We will analyze these historical texts in relation to other texts from the time period and examine how this time period has come to be represented in more modern pieces of literature and historical interpretations. In addition, we will compare texts across genres, time periods, and themes to look for critical issues related to both the human condition and the American Experience.
Additionally, students in English III will analyze United States literature as it reflects social perspective and historical significance by continuing to use language for expressive, expository, argumentative, and literary purposes. Students will be able to relate the experiences of others to their own and examine the relationship with the past and the present.
Furthermore, students will be able to analyze seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth century foundational US documents of historical and literary significance for their themes, purposes, and rhetorical features as well as demonstrate knowledge of eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth century foundational works of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same time period treat similar themes and/or topics.
