GHS Dual Credit - Technical Programs

Juniors and seniors may request to take selected automotive, welding, nursing, and fire academy courses during the school day. All courses except the CNA program are at the Midland College Advanced Technology Center (ATC.) Students are required to have reliable transportation to and from the ATC daily. MISD students have priority for these course slots. GHS students are admitted only if space is available. Midland College does not require students to take the TSI exam, however students will have to complete a Midland College application. Midland College will also require a meningitis vaccination or a signed opt-out agreement.

Greenwood High School covers the tuition for technical dual credit students. Students may be required to purchase other equipment or books on their own.

Fire Science

Students must have transportation to Harris Field.

Students who complete all Midland College and Texas Commission on Fire Protection eligibility requirements may take the Basic Suppression Exam that certifies individuals for entry-level firefighter positions statewide.

Midland College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Fire Science Technology and a Firefighter Certificate. The Firefighter Certificate includes Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification courses.

MC is certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.

Certified Nurse Aide

Nurse Aides are important! Working as a nurse aide is a rewarding career and can be a stepping stone to future nursing career pathways.

This program prepares students for entry level nursing assistants and achieves a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents. High school diploma and GED are NOT required.

Content includes residents’ rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Clinical is practical instruction with close and/or direct supervision provided by the clinical professional (faculty or preceptor), generally in a clinical setting. Clinical education is an unpaid learning experience. This is a direct patient contact course.

Patient Care Technician

Students must have transportation to the ATC in Midland.

The Patient Care Technician Program is a Midland College dual credit – Level 1 Certificate (15 credit hours). It is offered to students who have completed the CAN program. This program provides Phlebotomy, EKG Tech and Patient Care Tech training. A PCT provides patient support in an acute care facility like a hospital. They have competencies beyond that of a Nurse Aide, with the scope of a variety of patients ranging from pediatrics to emergency room and critical care.

Automotive Technology

Students must have transportation to the ATC in Midland.

Midland College is an ASE Education Foundation accredited program, and the curriculum is designed to prepare students for successful completion of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) national certification.

Cars and trucks are much more complex than they used to be. They rely on complicated computer systems and electronics for operation. The neighborhood mechanics of the past have been replaced by a new breed of specialists – sharp, highly skilled technicians who are versed in the latest automotive technologies.

Midland College offers high-tech training using state-of-the- art instruction, the latest technology and equipment that prepares technicians to troubleshoot complex issues and make repairs.

Welding Technology

Students must have transportation to the ATC in Midland.

Welding is a process for permanently joining metals together using an electric arc to melt a filler-metal into the original metal. Quite simply – the process makes two pieces of metal into one.

A welder may also cut, contour and bevel metal plates and structural shapes into dimensions as specified by blueprints, work orders, and templates using torches, saws, shears, or other machine tools. Welding takes the skill and talent of an artist acquired through training and discipline.

Diesel Technology

Students must have transportation to the MC Diesel Training Center in Midland.

Diesel engines have been in commercial use for over a century and in fact, are the dominant source of power for commercial trucks, trains, ships, and stationary power sources. Because of this, diesel mechanics have long been a vital part of the economy and their importance continues to grow as the popularity of diesel engines increases.

From the small diesel engines used for portable generators to gigantic diesel power plants driving ocean-going freighters, diesel engines are a central part of the world’s transport and industrial infrastructure.

For this reason, a career as a diesel mechanic is an extremely attractive option for individuals seeking a well-compensated and dependable source of employment.

Energy Technology

At Midland College, the Energy Technology program prepares students for careers as lease operators and general field technicians within the oil and gas industry. Other career paths may require students to perform different functions as members of an oil and/or gas production team.

The curriculum is designed to provide training in the electrical and mechanical aspects of the installation, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of control systems and surface equipment used in petroleum exploration and production.

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Petroleum Energy Technology coursework will be a combination of core academic courses and highly specialized technical classes. Safety practices and training are an important part of the program. Communication, leadership, and teamwork concepts are fundamental to the hands-on laboratory component.

Students entering this program should exhibit mechanical aptitude, the ability to read and follow instructions as outlined in service repair manuals and enjoy precision work and problem solving.
