The Youth in Government (YIG) program helps to create the next generation of good citizens. Through our programs, we demystify local, state and national governmental systems so tomorrow's adults will know how to effect change within these systems. We expand horizons so young people will understand their role within a global society.
The program uses the service-learning model in the firm belief that leadership is developed by doing. All programs are guided and directed by committed adult volunteers and YMCA professional staff.
Students work for months leading up to the SC Middle School Youth in Government conference to be able to present a bill in a simulation of our state's democratic process. Students take on roles as Delegates (Senators and Representatives) and Elected Officials (Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Speaker of the House) to share, debate, and vote on bills they researched and wrote themselves about topics important to them.
The Youth In Government conference is held yearly in our state capital of Columbia, South Carolina. Students will participate in model legislature in very building and seats where our elected officials do business: in committee rooms and State House chambers.
At the end of a busy couple days of debate, there is always fun to be had! Delegates will have the chance to interact with students from around the state (and with their chaperoning advisors) and have some "mandatory fun" at the Columbia Convention Center the second night of the conference. This often includes a game room, arts and crafts, and a karaoke dance party!
