Hello and Welcome,
I moved to Greenville in 2005, and have taught science in public schools since 2001. I have a son that graduated high school in Greenville County Schools, has finished his studies in chemistry (imagine that?!) at Winthrop University and is now in his third year at Clemson University to earn his doctoral degree in chemistry. (I'm super proud of him as you can imagine.)
I am passionate about teaching. I invest my time for each student, and hold them accountable for their part in our learning process. I can hold my students accountable, because I hold myself accountable for my work. You will find that in our class, students are constantly being challenged to "think" and "do." We don't just sit and do book work. Nope.
For each and every one of my students I bring to my classroom the same level of expectations and dedication that I want for my own child from a teacher or professor. I would like to encourage each of you as parents and students to actively engage in all learning opportunities and experiences offered during high school and beyond.
Success looks different for each of us. Together, we will work to achieve as much success as you are capable of at this point in your life.
I look forward to learning with each of you as we face the many challenges ahead.
Yours in education,
David Thibodeaux, M.Ed.
Want to know some more about me? Well, here you go:
Years ago I had this notion that I would accept the challenge of doing something that (presumably) few men attempt: Become an elementary education teacher. I attended the University of South Carolina for two years studying elementary and middle school-level education before discovering that I wanted the challenge of teaching science at the high school level. I completed my undergraduate studies through a collaborative program between the University of South Carolina and Francis Marion University. The result: I graduated with a B.S. and double majoring in Biology and Secondary Education. My professor and mentor emphasized how important it was to be as well-rounded in my understanding, studies and application of science or whatever is being learned. So, I also minored in chemistry and physics during my studies at university. As if that was not enough I was also raising our newborn child. Wow, thinking back on this I was really busy. To quote Ryan Holiday, an author and contemporary practioner of stoic philosopy, "The obstacle is the way."
My teaching experiences include all levels of the biological sciences, plus chemistry, physics, physical science and environmental science. Not satisfied with all of this schooling (and debt), I then decided to earn my masters because it sounded fun. I guess I'm trying to convey to you that I'm very highly qualified to teach and learn with you.
Before becoming certified to teach, I served ten years of active duty service with the United States Air Force. While on active duty, I maintained the electrical and environmental systems for F-4 and F-16 fighter aircraft. The last four years of my enlisted military tour, I worked jointly with the United States Navy in an electronics program for aircraft and naval systems, and held a NASA-level certification for such technologies. My duty stations included Shaw AFB, SC; Kunsan AB, Korea; Charleston Naval Station, SC (closed); and Norfolk Naval Station, VA. I served temporary duties in Alaska and Canada, and am a veteran of the Gulf War.
