Accessing Mathia and Carnegie on Backpack

As a reminder please have the students check the Weekly Planner on this Northwood website for the weekly homework and the due dates. Student can access the Mathia homework software and their textbook through their backpack as shown in the image above and described below;

In order to attain mastery in math this school year, the students will need to complete their weekly homework practice and review for quizzes and tests using the textbook practice problems under the unit we are studying as described below;

1) To access the Mathia homework students will log into Backpack where they access their grades

2) Once in Backpack the students will access Carnegie under Education Apps

3) Students will press the blue button to access Mathia to do their homework and to access the textbook. The textbook can be used to review for quizzes and tests where they can practice the problems under the Unit we are learning.

Mastery in Mathia

Mathia is very different from IXL and measures Mastery as you complete problems. There will be a bar with circles showing up on the right corner of every workspace the student completes. If the circle is blue or unfilled as seen above, the student has not mastered the workspace and the standards in the unit, and their performance score will be low. However if the circles start turning green, the student is beginning to master the concepts. Also if the student uses too many hints, this counts against their performance score and they really need to be building on what they have learned as they do the problems. Please guide your student on this as they complete the homework assignments.

Please follow the steps below to log in to Mathia:

  • Log into your backpack

  • Click educational apps

  • Click on Carnegie Learning

  • Click on Mathia

  • If it prompts you to log in with active directory, please do that.

You must log in through backpack every time. It will not allow you to bookmark the page or just Google Mathia.

Here is a video to walk you through it as well. Logging into Mathia.

Troubleshooting tips:

  • ALWAYS authenticate your computer!

  • Try turning it off and turning it back on

  • Don’t have a lot of extra tabs open

  • Try being close to your WIFI router

  • Be patient! Sometimes it just takes a little bit to load!

Remember, you have before school and FLEX time to work on Mathia as well! If you are struggling, reach out to your teacher and join the Google Meets!

Once you log in to Mathia you will see this screen:

I am focusing on the percent completed and the number of workspaces completed. I will assign workspaces each day. They can always work ahead!!

Mathia Basics

There are two different types of workspaces that you will encounter while working through Mathia. They are described in the chart below.

There is no set amount of problems for these workspaces. It will continue to give you problems until you prove mastery.

*Goal in both workspaces is to fill the circles in - make them green!*

Let’s talk about hints:

  • As you know, on the third hint it will give you the answer.

  • Use them sparingly! If you continue to use the hint button in a Mastery workspace, you will have to do a lot of extra problems. The software considers you using the hint as you not knowing how to do the problem. Remember, Mathia wants you to prove that you have mastered the standard.

  • I can see how many hints you use!

Instead of hints, if you are struggling to understand, use the step-by-step or sample problem. These do not hurt you! My advice would be to write down the step-by-step. This way you have it to help you when you work through the next one on your own.
