Curriculum
My goal is to provide intervention and student support alongside classroom instruction in preparation for grade level reading mastery. Instruction is student-centered and based on South Carolina College and Career Ready Standards. This goal can best be achieved by parents, students, and teachers all working together to improve reading skills. I have provided several websites to assist parents in helping students at home. I work with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students five days a week in a small group setting (4-5 students). My curriculum instruction follows the district guidelines for Math and Reading Intervention. Any additional help at home during the week will greatly improve the reading and math skills of each student.
Strategies to help good readers become great readers:
1. Read with your student everyday! Read aloud to them and have them read aloud to you.
2. Do a comprehension check by asking questions such as: What is the story about? Who are the main characters? What happened first, next, last? Can you retell the story in your own words? Students should respond with specific details.
3. Remind your student to "read like you are talking". Reading like you are talking is an indication of good oral reading fluency.
4. Visit the Greenville County Main Library or any local branch and get your student a Library Card. All the student has to do is write his name independently. It is worth the time, because students feel so empowered as readers to have their very own Library card! This is a wonderful building block towards a great Reading foundation for your student and provides a great opportunity to have free family outings to the Library to check out books. As a bonus, returning the books on time builds responsibility for your student.
5. Enjoy your special time reading with your child and praise them for their efforts to become a better reader!
