Classroom Behavior and Expectations
Be on time and be prepared.
Sit in your assigned seat.
Be attentive and participate in the lesson.
Keep your cell phone out of sight! (This is state law and school district policy.)
Use acceptable language.
Be respectful of your teacher and classmates.
Use the restroom BEFORE class begins!
When you enter the classroom…
Settle down quickly and work on your bellringer until I call for your attention.
Check the Resource Table if you need some material that you do not have.
During Class
Remain seated.
Ask my permission before getting out of your seat.
Be alert at all times, no sleeping.
Speak softly, if necessary.
Avoid disruptive behavior: behaviors that stop instruction will be reported to parents and an administrator.
Use earbuds/headphones only when listening to class videos.
Complete and turn in your assignments.
Redo your assignments when the teacher points out your mistakes.
Participate in the lesson; you learn better when you do.
During Speaking/Listening Activities
Focus on the question in the assignment.
If your partner talks about a different topic, redirect him or her to the assignment.
Make an effort to do the task.
Do not give up if it is difficult.
Give your best attempt.
Ask questions to help you understand the assignment.
Reading and Writing Activities
Follow the instructions for the task assigned.
Look at the example I have given you. (I will always do an example before I let you work on your own.)
Avoid using Google Translate! Use your dictionaries instead.
Make an effort to do the task.
Do not give up if it is difficult.
Give your best attempt.
Ask questions to help you understand the assignment.
All Group Activities
Work with your partner(s) to complete the activity.
Ask questions if you do not understand the assignment.
If students in your group do not understand, raise your hand and ask the teacher.
Use your inner voice to prevent disruptions.
Submit assignments in Google Classroom.*
Be ready to present your work.
At the end of the Lesson
Put your trash in the bin.
Turn in your assignment.
Put away your materials in the appropriate place.
Ask any questions you may have.
Remain seated until the bell rings.
No one should be out of his/her seat before the bell.
Take ALL your belongings with you when you leave.
Cell Phone Policy
In accordance with state law and school district policy, students are not allowed to use their cell phones during the school day. This includes when they go to use the restroom or see another teacher. In this classroom, you will place your cellphone in the Phone Home box as soon as you enter the classroom and retrieve it at the end of the class period.
Attendance
Each student is responsible for keeping up with their attendance days. You are allowed five unexcused absences per semester. If you exceed this number, you will need to do Seat Time Recovery or you may fail the class.
Tardy
If you arrive in the classroom after the bell then you are tardy. First Block students should have a pass from the Front Office. Enter the room quietly, turn in your tardy pass, and take your seat. Other students who arrive to class late without a pass will be given lunch detention.
Absence / Making Up Work / Remediation
Students who were absent will have the opportunity to make up missing assignments, projects or tests. Missing assignments and instructions for completing them will be in Google Classroom. Try to make up your work as soon as possible after your absence.
Keep abreast of your assignments and try not to fall behind. Falling behind can get you easily overwhelmed. If you have questions about a lesson, ask me about it immediately.
I will be available for tutoring on Thursdays from 8:15-8:35. You will need to let me know that you will be coming to see me so that I can give you a pass.
Grades
You may view grades in PowerSchool on the student portal.
Major Grades: 60%
Minor Grades: 40%
You will receive grades based on actual performance. Complete your assignments carefully and in a timely manner to receive full credit.
The South Carolina grading scale is as follows:
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70–79
D = 60–69
F = 0-59
Consequences for Misbehavior
Please see the Southside High School Student Planner for complete information on behaviors and consequences. The discipline matrix posted in this room displays the consequences for noncompliant behaviors. I expect all students to comply with school and classroom rules. Students who fail to follow rules and procedures may have one or more of the following consequences:
1st Offense – Warning
2nd and 3rd Offense – Detention and parent contact
4th Offense – Referral to appropriate administrator
Major infractions of conduct may result in removal from the classroom and immediate disciplinary action.
