Dear Parents,
Welcome to third grade! This year is going to be a busy and exciting year for all of us. The following is information to help you understand our class procedures and some of my expectations for our class.
DISCIPLINE- explained below
HOMEWORK- Homework will be given Monday through Thursday and should take no more than 30-40 minutes to complete. The assignments will usually be in reading, spelling, and math. However, special projects or tasks may also be assigned periodically. Students that complete class work early will be allowed to work on homework in class as long as it does not become a distraction. Your child will be responsible for copying all homework assignments into their agenda each morning. Please be sure to sign this each evening stating that your child has completed their homework.
HOMEWORK FOLDER- Each child will be using a folder to keep their homework, spelling list, important papers, and study guides. Please go through this folder each day with your child to be sure about homework assignments as well as other important happenings at school. Your child’s homework folder should go home each afternoon and return to school each morning.
BIRTHDAYS- Birthdays are very exciting and worth celebrating. You are welcome to send cupcakes on your child’s birthday so that we can join in the celebration of this special day. They will be served at lunch. Birthday party invitations will not be distributed at school. For safety reasons, our school does not participate in obtaining or distributing invitations.
FIELD TRIPS- You will be notified of upcoming field trips and a permission form will be sent home for you to complete and sign. Students must have signed permission to go on trips.
CONFERENCES- Conferences will be scheduled at the end of the first and third grading periods. Others will be scheduled as needed. If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s progress, or anything else, please feel free to contact me at 355-5239. You may also email me at sncox@greenville.k12.sc.us. I feel it is very important to stay in contact with all of my parents. Please do not hesitate to reach me with your questions or concerns.
WORK FOLDER- Your child will bring their work folder home every Tuesday. This folder will include all graded assignments and tests. It is very important that you review these papers with your child. A spreadsheet has been placed outside the folder for you to sign and date that you have looked over each of these papers. The folder is due back by Thursday.
DISMISSAL ARRANGEMENTS- Please remember to send a note on days when there are changes in the way your child is to go home. This is for your child’s safety. Car riders will be given a vehicle number to place in their windshield to help with dismissal in the afternoons.
PERSONAL BELONGINGS- Please label all personal belongings with your child’s name. Extra materials such as coloring books and toys are better kept at home unless we have a special day.
DRESS CODE- Please be sure to check the school’s and district’s dress code.
Discipline Program

Grading: We use a variety of assessments to determine a fair grade that gives an accurate portrayal of each child’s work. You can view your child’s progress and their grades through power teacher as well as through their weekly graded paper folders that come home. Grades will be available in power teacher within 10 school days of the assignment being turned in. The district grading scale is below:
A-90-100
B-80-89
C- 70-79
D- 60-69
U- 59 and below
Homework policy: All homework should be completed and turned in as directed by the teacher. Students write their homework in their agenda and are responsible for completing it promptly. If a student does not complete their homework they will be expected to use a portion of their recess to complete it. Homework is a review of previously taught skills and should be able to be completed independently. Please review the homework section of the student handbook in the student agendas.
Classroom Management: A letter was sent home at the beginning of the year regarding the management plan in our classrooms.
Communication: We think it is critical to keep an open line of communication open between parents and families. We will communicate with you in a variety of ways this year including notes home in agenda/HW folder, student behavior logs, Tuesday Folders with graded papers, our website, newsletter, conferences as well as phone calls and emails. I have included some important contact information below so that you have access to all of these types of communication. We are looking forward to all of us working together as a team for your child to be successful!

Tuesday folders will come home each week on Tuesday and should be signed and returned by the following Tuesday. We will be beginning our day promptly at 8:00 so please ensure that your child arrives on time to school each morning. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
In the event your child misses work due to an absence he or she will be allowed 5 days to complete the missing assignments IF the absence is an excused absence.
If a written excuse is not turned in, the absence is considered unexcused. Teachers are not required to help students make up work when an absence is unexcused.
