Reading Series: Fountas and Pinnell
This year we will continue the Fountas and Pinnell Balanced Literacy guided reading system. In this program your child has an opportunity to work with the teacher on a more individualized level. We take the time to discover where your child’s strengths and weaknesses are in reading and then help them to accelerate their strengths and strengthen their weaknesses. It is our goal to improve your child’s reading ability and we believe that this program will be the best tool we can use to get them there. Each week they will have a shared reading piece and then they will also get to have a guided reading piece that facilitates a skill we feel they should work on. If you have questions about the series or program, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Math Series: Go Math!
This year we will continue to use the Go Math! series. With this math series your child will have a lot of new resources at their fingertips. The students will have manipulatives to use as well as student workbooks and a textbook that will be able to come home with them. We have a wealth of supplies that will help your child succeed in Math this year.
Other instructional materials that will be utilized are math manipulatives, science kits, computer software, and the Internet.
Students will be given a math and spelling test each week. A weekly reading test will also be given. Social Studies and Science tests will be given at the end of each unit of study. Four reading unit tests will be administered. Quizzes will be given periodically throughout all units of study. Students will also be assessed on writing assignments and projects.
Students Records: The following items will be utilized to track students’ progress.
Grading Scale:
A 90-100
B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
U 59 and below
Homework will be given Monday – Thursday. Projects will be assigned throughout the year that students may need to work on over the weekend. Students will receive no more than 40 minutes of homework each night. The majority of homework will be in Reading, Math, and Spelling.
Missed Work/Make-up Policy
Please refer to the school district policy.
When a student is absent, a note is required from the parent or a doctor for it to be an excused absence. Documentation must be turned in within 3 days of returning to school. When students report late to school, a parent must sign them in, and the student must receive a note from the office to give to their teacher.
Consequences for Violating Class and School Rules/Policies
Fourth grade teachers use a series of consequences in the classroom. When a student chooses not to follow a rule, the consequences are as follows:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Disciplinary Action: the student’s seat may be changed, assignment changed, or the student may be asked to go to another teacher’s room for a few minutes.
3. Written Documentation: Either a call is placed or a note is written to the parent/guardian
4. Loss of Privilege: Student may eat lunch alone, in silence.
5. Call Out: an administrator will speak with the child and call home again if necessary.
6. Referral: student will receive suspension after second referral is issued.
Lunch choices are made when students enter the classroom.
When leaving the classroom, students will line up by groups or rows.
Presentation of Rules and Procedures
During the first few weeks of school all rules, consequences, rewards, and procedures will be reviewed with the students. Rules, consequences, and rewards are posted in each classroom. Procedures and routines are modeled, explained, and practiced continuously. School-wide rule review days are also scheduled for students and teachers, and administrators to review rules.
Parents will receive weekly communication through the blue folder. Progress Reports and Report Cards will be sent home according to the schedule previously given. Parent-Teacher conferences will be held in October. Conferences, notes, and phone calls will be used as a means of communication throughout the year when necessary.
