The Greenville County School District is committed to providing successful literacy experiences for all students. Our goal is to create engaged independent readers, writers, thinkers, and communicators.
Greenville County Schools' Secondary ELA Instructional Framework incorporates principles of both disciplinary and balanced literacy.
The model is predicated on these beliefs:
"that students can develop deep conceptual knowledge in [ELA] only by using the habits of reading, writing, talking, and thinking the discipline values and uses”
that students can learn these skills through intentional and consistent implementation of best practices
The framework incorporates the research based theories of Vygotsky, Fountas and Pinnell, Gallagher, Calkins, McConachie, Lent, and others.
The model fosters gradual release of responsibility to the student as they receive instruction needed to meet grade level expectations in reading and writing, while allowing students to work at a level that is appropriate for individual growth and achievement.
All instruction in literacy is grounded in the South Carolina 2015 ELA Standards. These standards are a guiding force in determining grade level curriculum and learning targets.
