Course Description:
English 2 Honors is a theme-based course designed to prepare students for the rigor of the South Carolina State Standards for College and Career Readiness. Note: this course carries Honors GPA weighting.
PREREQUISITE: Earned 80 or above in English 1 Honors or a strong A (95 or above) in English 1 CP; High level of performance in reading and writing skills; Ability to think critically and demonstrated enthusiasm for language arts; Teacher recommendation.
Read Literature: Read and understand a range of texts, including stories, drama, and poetry, of increasing complexity.
Read Informational Text: Read and understand a broad range of literary nonfiction, including exposition, argument, and functional text, such as personal essays, speeches, opinion pieces, memoirs, and historical and technical accounts.
Write: Generate three written products such as arguments, informative or explanatory texts, and narratives, as well as use the writing process and technology to develop and share your writing. Writing will also emphasize research and involve writing for short and extended time frames.
Speak and Listen: Comprehend information presented in a variety of media and formats, participate in collaborative discussions, and present knowledge and ideas clearly.
Acquire Language Skills: Address the conventions of Standard English grammar, usage and mechanics; knowledge of language; and vocabulary acquisition and use
Unit 1: Conflict and Connection
In Conflict and Connection students will learn about conflicts between people of different backgrounds and how those conflicts affected them. Students will conclude the unit by writing an argumentative essay about a difference that can cause conflict but can also be bridged. Learning targets are differentiated to meet the needs of students in this course. Each unit is designed to promote independent research, problem-solving, higher-order thinking, and creative thought.
Unit 2: The Power of Perception
In The Power of Perception, students will explore how perspective and point of view shape human thinking. They will conclude the unit by writing an explanatory piece on different viewpoints related to a specific issue or problem and delivering a multimedia presentation. Learning targets are differentiated to meet the needs of all students. Each unit promotes independent research, problem-solving, higher-order thinking, and creative expression.
Unit 3: Hard-Won Liberty
In Hard-Won Liberty, students will explore stories of individuals who resisted oppression and examine the meaning of freedom. They will conclude the unit by writing an argumentative essay about a freedom that matters to them and how it can be protected. Learning targets are differentiated to meet the needs of all students. Each unit promotes independent research, problem-solving, higher-order thinking, and creative expression.
Unit 4: Reckless Ambition
In Reckless Ambition, students will examine the consequences of unchecked ambition by reading The Tragedy of Macbeth. They will conclude the unit by writing a literary analysis exploring how a lesson from the play remains relevant today. Learning targets are differentiated to meet the needs of students. Each unit promotes independent research, problem-solving, higher-order thinking, and creative expression.

Final Exam (EOCEP)
The English 2 EOCEP (End of Course Examination Program) is a two- part exam designed by the SCDOE. Students must take both the writing portion and the reading portion of the exam to receive a score. Students will be assigned each portion separately on different days.)

2nd Day Late = -10 points
3rd Day Late = -10 points
4th Day Late = -10 points
No late work will be accepted after class period 4. Student absences excused, unexcused, or related to discipline are not affected by this policy.
Students may revise and resubmit major writing assignments as long as the student initially turned the assignment in on time and has conferenced with their teacher.
Make-up work should be returned within 5 class periods of the absence. This applies to daily assignments, quizzes, and tests. Students must schedule a time to make up a missed test or quiz. Minor assignments not turned in within 5 class periods of the absence will receive a zero. Missing work is the student’s responsibility, not the teachers! All assignments are posted on Google Classroom
MagicSchool AI Tools for Students
This year, students will have access to MagicSchool AI, a generative AI platform built for schools that will help them learn to use the technology safely and responsibly.
With tools like ChatGPT and others being used in the professional world, it’s important that students learn how to use the technology safely. By using MagicSchool in our classes, your student will be prepared for the future of technology in the workforce.
While students use MagicSchool tools for purposes such as receiving real time feedback, getting their questions answered, generating images, and in other exciting ways, I will have access to their chats to ensure that it’s used appropriately. Rest assured, MagicSchool does not collect or train on student data.
Be sure to ask your child about how they’re using AI in the classroom and take a look at the engaging ways they’ve utilized the MagicSchool tools to enhance their learning!
