What is a Literacy Specialist?
What is a Literacy Specialist?
As you can tell, I LOVE reading! It is my 29th year of teaching and I have been lucky enough to have taught third and fourth graders in California, fourth and seventh graders in South Carolina, been a literacy coach in middle school, and now I share my love of reading by coaching elementary teachers in literacy practices. I am also a Reading Interventionist working with students who need extra help with Reading. As a Literacy Specialist, I am surrounded by "All Things Literacy."
Literacy includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening strategies that help struggling readers succeed in the classroom, no matter what subject they are learning! Just like a great basketball player needs coaching, so do teachers! It's a tough job and because reading and language are my specialties, I get to share what I've learned with others. I'm lucky enough to have learned from the best about how language and reading develops in children. As a matter of fact, reading is a true science. Don't think for one second though, that I don't also learn from those I "coach," because I do! As an educator, trust me when I say, we are lifelong learners constantly improving what we know and what we do. People learn from the experience and wisdom from others. As a teacher, everything I know, I learned from someone else. I have been lucky to learn from mentors, teachers, family, friends, and especially every child I have ever met!
Why learn? Because education is constantly evolving and kids need to be engaged in the learning process!
Why literacy? Because I truly believe that if you can't read, you miss out on a whole world of opportunities literally at your fingertips. And if you don't comprehend what you're reading, you can't separate fact from fiction. That is especially true in this digital age we live it!
