Hello Health Science Students!
Health Science 1, Health Science 2, Human Structure and Function (formerly known as Health Science 3), and Medical Terminology are offered to students interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field. Each course introduces students to healthcare history, careers, law and ethics, cultural diversity, healthcare language and math, infection control, professionalism, communication, basics of the organization of healthcare facilities, and types of healthcare insurance. Students get a good grasp of where healthcare has been, where it’s going and how professionalism and personal characteristics impact their success. Students will be introduced to “Standard Precautions” and learn about confidentiality through HIPAA. As students are guided through healthcare career exploration, they will discuss education levels, and requirements needed to be successful. Students will learn first-aid procedures and learn fire safety. The skills and knowledge that students learn in Health Science 1 serve to prepare them for future the Health Science 2 course. It is recommended that students should have an 80% score or higher in Health Science 1 to progress on to Health Science 2. Health Science 2 goes more in depth on what is covered in Health Science 1. Human Structure and Function focuses on body systems, diseases, treatments, and pharmacology, and goes more in-depth on medical skills, best practices, and patient communication. Students in each course will be doing hands-on skills, creative projects, group work, and independent studies. I want my students, no matter their learning style, to be completely engaged in my classroom.
Medical terminology is designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of health professions. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, combining forms, and abbreviations. Utilizing a body systems approach, students will define, interpret, and pronounce medical terms relating to structure and function, pathology, diagnosis, clinical procedures, and pharmacology. Students will use problem-solving techniques to assist in developing an understanding of course concepts. Textbooks must be brought to class every day.
