At RGS, the librarians use the American Association of School Librarians National Standards for all students, kindergarten through 8th grade. These standards are reflected in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, and are essential for students.
For our K5- 5th grade classes, these standards are integrated into lessons taught to by the librarian during students' library related arts time. The librarian collaborates with classroom teachers and the instructional coach to ensure lessons are strategically aligned with content students are learning English, Science, or Social Studies to maximize their effectiveness and provide support for students and teachers.
For middle school students, the library is no longer a related arts class. Students receive library instruction that is integrated into their other classes, so the librarian may teach AASL standards in any other class to support the needs of the students and teachers at the time. For example, the librarian may teach lessons on how to find information in a database to support research in a science or social studies class. Many ELA classes also come to the library frequently to check out books and receive lessons related to their ELA content and improve skills in information and media literacy.
