READ 180 Syllabus (2021-2022)

Purpose: READ 180 is a class designed for students who need to improve and increase their reading ability. The program used is READ 180 by Scholastic. READ 180 is designed to meet individual needs in reading and writing skills. In addition, students learn a variety of strategies for both reading and learning.

Helpful Information: READ 180 is designed to help older struggling readers become more successful in life. Failure will not be accepted in this classroom! The skills taught and practiced in this class will/can be used in all aspects of school and life. This room needs to remain positive. To help maintain this positive environment, there are some BASIC RULES that we must all follow. In general, you should practice the Golden Rule: be respectful and treat everyone (including the teacher) as you would like to be treated. No putting each other down or making fun of the class.

To maximize success in class, students are expected to:

BE PRESENT & BE PREPARED TO WORK

    • arrive on time to attend R180 class

    • adhere to school attendance policy with regard to tardies and truancies

    • stay focused and engaged during classroom instruction

    • complete and submit assignments that are due on eLearning days

    • come to class with all necessary materials (charged Chromebook)

CLASS GOALS:

All students in this class will:

  • Take genuine pleasure in reading and writing

Classroom Setup: The READ 180 program consists of four blocks of time; whole group, small group, Read 180 computer application, & independent reading.


  1. Whole Group– We will be working together as a whole class with a focus on reading skills and strategies, vocabulary, writing, and grammar.

  2. Computer Application - Students work independently on segments in the READ 180 program.

  3. Independent Reading - Students read silently from their choice of reading paperbacks, digital books, or listening to an audiobook. Students will record what they are reading as well as respond to a reading prompt during this time as well.

  4. Small Group - In a small-group setting, students receive targeted, data-driven instruction unique to their individual learning needs.


Grading Grades are based on the Scholastic READ 180 model. The grade is divided into four parts.

Whole Group Work – These activities include bellwork, daily participation points, whole group rBook activities, any class projects, and participating in outside reading activities.

Small Group Work – This grade also consists of rBook activities, but it also includes written essays, individual instruction in weakness areas, Writer’s Notebook entries, and rskills tests.

Scholastic READ 180 Software - This grade consists of all activity on the instructional software which is at the heart of READ 180. This computer program individualizes instruction for each student who signs in. This is an integral part of the program. This grade also includes the student’s oral fluency grade.

Independent/Modeled Reading – This grade consists of self motivation and self checks. The first part is a daily reading log which must include the date, pages read, and a response to that day’s reading. The second portion of this grade is the actual test on the novel as well as


GRADING SCALE:

A (100-90)

B (89-80)

C (79-70)

D (69-60)

F (59 and below)


REWARDS:

Students who exhibit appropriate behavior and meet classroom expectations will be rewarded in a variety of ways. Such rewards include verbal praise, positive phone calls and letters home, and prizes.

EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Come to class prepared and with a CAN DO, goal oriented attitude.

  2. Work to your highest potential and use your time wisely.

  3. Respect yourself, your classmates, and Mrs. Bayne.

  4. Cell phones and earpods are not to be out during class time unless given permission by the teacher for emergency only. (Headphones are provided when using the computer software program.)

CONSEQUENCES:

Students who do not follow the appropriate guidelines for behavior and who do not meet classroom expectations will incur the following consequences in sequential order:

  1. warning # 1

  2. warning # 2

  3. Students will receive a step on the schoolwide discipline ladder.

  4. A referral will be put in and sent to their grade level administrator.
