Course Description: Marine Science is a semester laboratory science. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to Marine science and the basic sciences that underpin it. The overview of the unique characteristics of the marine environment by exploring the physical and biological characteristics of seawater.

Course goals: Students will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning and inquiry. Understand the history of ocean study and the methods used. Explain the theories of plate tectonics and seafloor spreading. Understand how daily ocean processes affect marsh and coastal systems. Identify the major phyla of ocean animals and explain their significance in the global ocean food web. Explain the human impacts, both positive and negative on the ocean ecosystem.

The students will do an Ocean pollution group project (Tie-dye). Each student will need a white 100% cotton T-shirt or the 95% cotton t-shirts

Grading Policy: 90-100 A, 89-80 B, 79-70 C, 69-60 D and 59- below F

Major assignments: 60% Minor Assessments: 40%

*** Reflective journal writing will come from Science World and other materials related to marine science.

This is a tentative schedule but is subject to change

Marine Science Units of Study

Intro to Marine Science (3 weeks)

General Biology Review

  • What does it mean to be “safe” in the Science Classroom and Science Lab setting?

  • How important is the scientific method?

  • Why are the oceans beneficial to us?

  • Who were/are some influencers of Marine Science?

  • How has technology played a critical and pivotal role in marine science?

  • Why are timelines significant?

Physical and Chemical Ocean Properties (3 weeks)

  • What geological features affect the world’s oceans?

  • How do the major factors of salinity, temperature, and pressure affect life in the ocean?

  • What influences the tides, waves and currents of the ocean?

  • What role do the ocean and tides play in global weather?

Ocean zones (2 weeks)

  • What are the four major ocean zones?

  • What are the characteristics of each zone, including physical features and life present there?

Taxonomy/ Classification (1 week)

  • How is life organized and classified in biology?

  • What marine organisms are found within these classification (general)

Plant, Microorganism and invertebrates (5 weeks)

  • What are the invertebrate phyla found in the ocean?

  • What are examples and characteristics of each phylum?

  • How does complexity increase with each?

Vertebrate (3 weeks)

  • What are the invertebrates found in the ocean?

  • What are examples and characteristics of each class from this subphylum?

Marine Conservation (1 week)

  • What are the threats facing the ocean and the life formed there?

  • What are some of the efforts being made to preserve Ocean and resources?

Intervention: #feeling cloudy board, After school tutoring, reteaching and retake

Expectations and Rules

1.Be responsible (as well as be accountable for your actions especially your grade)

2.Be respectful ( to yourself, peers and authority figures)

3.Be cooperative

4. Be honest ( no cheating)

5. Be present

Students are expected not to:

  • Use profanity, say racial slurs, and yell out in class

  • Be on their phone without permission especially playing videos , face time and answering phone calls

  • Throwing, slinging, flinging, tossing things in class

  • Have a hood on in class or other headgear

  • Leave the class and wander the hallways or go to the vending machine during class time

  • Eat in class without teacher’s permission

  • Sit on top of the desks or counter tops

  • Have open can sodas in class

  • Spray, roll on or apply any fragrance on in the classroom

Consequences:

  1. Warning 3. Parent Contact

2. Detention 4. Referral

**Disclaimer: the order can vary due to the nature of the situation.

If your student continues to display misbehavior in my classroom, hindering it in any way that will interfere with the learning of others. I will call for a conference. So that we can come together to help resolve the misbehavior so your student will be successful in this class.

*At any time a student's behavior is at the point that I need to call administration for removal due to refusal to obey, it is an automatic written referral.

** Detention with me, a student will not be allowed to be on his or her cell phone. Nor will they be allowed to bring their friends along with them because there will be no talking. Failure to come to lunch detention is an automatic referral.

**** If a student doe not pass a test, the student must attend a reteaching session(s) before the student retakes the test

***All note quizzes students are allowed to use their notes
