Course Description:
In this course, students will develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to be physically active throughout their lives. Students will learn how to enjoy physical activity, master motor skills and movement forms, and develop social skills. Students at the high school level must earn one credit of Physical Education 1 in order to graduate. This course strives to follow “best practices” that provide students with developmentally appropriate, fun experiences in physical activity. All curriculum units are developed using the South Carolina State Academic Standards for physical education.

SC State Standards for Physical Education
Standard 1: Demonstrate competency in at least two different motor skills and movements.
Standard 2: Demonstrate knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
Standard 4: Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
Standard 5: Demonstrate awareness that physical activity provides the opportunity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self expression, and/or social interaction.
Expectations:
Students are expected to dress out, participate actively, and to the best of their ability in class at all times.
Students are to be in the locker room by the time the tardy bell rings. (Refer to GHS Tardy Policy)
Students are given 5 minutes to dress.
Students will be dismissed from the locker room and go directly to the gym. Once the whistle has blown the students will sit in their assigned spot.
After class, students will dress and wait for the bell to exit the locker room.
Students are assigned a PE lock and PE locker. Using lockers is a requirement. Lockers are not to be shared, and all valuables should be stored in the locker provided. Replacement cost for a lost lock is $5.
Cell phones, AirPods, and any other electronic devices are not allowed during class.
Do not leave the gym or locker room without permission.
Respect school property. Keep all equipment, bleachers, gym and locker rooms in good condition.
No food or drinks in the gym or locker room.
Discipline Policy:
Physical Education classes will follow the Greenville High School Handbook
Grading Plan:
Student progress will be cumulatively assessed each nine weeks based on the following methods of evaluation.
Minor Grades = 40% - Students will receive one grade per week in the following categories:
Dressing In
Cardio/ Strength Training Effort
Sports Participation
Major Grades = 60% - Tests will be announced in advance and study guides will be posted on google classroom. If a student is absent for the review, even if excused, they are still expected to take the test upon returning to class and are expected to review on their own at home.

Requirements:
Dress In Appropriate Clothes for Physical Activity: (in accordance with Greenville County School Guidelines)
Sleeves wider than your id
Shirts covering midriff
Shorts that are mid thigh or longer (past your fingertips)
Athletics shoes (No boots, hiking shoes or sandals)
Warm-ups or sweats for cooler weather
Students dressing in the appropriate clothing for class will earn 20 points a day totaling 100 points for the week.
Participation: Daily participation is required. This includes warm up exercises, sport activity and conditioning portion of class.
Students will receive a daily fitness effort grade for the week. Each day is worth 20 points for a total of 100 points each week.
Students will receive a daily sports participation grade for the week. Each day is worth 20 points for a total of 100 points each week.
***A doctor’s note is required to be excused from dressing out and participation in class activities. Students will complete a written/graded assignment to earn participation points for the day. Students will still be required to dress out, unless they are excused by the teacher.
***A written parent note with contact information may only excuse level of participation. Students will still be required to dress out.
Test:
Written tests will include multiple choice, true/false, matching and short answers.
Performance tests will include skills and cardio programs.
Late Work Policy: 10 points off per day, max of 60 if turned in by the end of unit, max of 50 if turned in after the unit.
