Rosetta Stone® Community Solution for K-12 is a program available to the parents of our English Language Learners. This program provides parents with the means to learn and develop their English language skills. It also enables parents to increase their engagement with their child’s school and help to improving their child's learning achievements. The online lessons from Rosetta Stone allow parents to use this program anywhere they have access to the internet. This program is free to parents and is on a first-come first-serve basis.

SYLLABUS

-The WIDA screener is used as a screening test and is given to incoming students who had a language other than English on the home language survey.  The screener assists with programmatic placement decisions such as identification and placement of ML students. 

Standards/Learning & Developmental Goals

Course Goals:

• The primary goal of the Multilingual Learner program (MLP) is to improve English communication skills with instruction and practice in listening, speaking, reading, and writing to build stronger vocabulary and strengthen reading and writing skills. 

• The secondary goal of the ESOL program is to support core area classes: English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.

Strategies:

• Reading strategies include letter recognition, sounds, sight words, family words, rhymes, and content area vocabulary.

• English language leveled reading books (fiction and non-fiction) on various topics are used to increase reading skills.

• Reading strategies such as picture reading, phonics, chunking words, and use of content are used to increase students' understanding of literature.

• Writing activities show understanding of word usage and the writing process.

Summative Assessment:

-ACCESS is administered yearly in February  to assess language proficiency: 

Level 1: pre-functional

Level 2: beginning

Level 3: intermediate

Level 4: advanced

Level 5: fluent

Communication with Parents

A "Parent Notification" form is sent home  at the beginning of the school year informing parents of the ACCESS or WIDA score.  Forms are sent in English and/or the other home language.

 1st grade

• reading fluency with sight word books

• sight words (reading and writing)

• writing complete sentences and a story

 2nd grade   

• reading books for correct decoding and fluency; using letter patterns to read and write                                      

• writing: complete stories with adjectives and details

 3rd grade

• using text dependent analysis (providing evidence for the answer)

• writing: complete stories with details 

• increasing vocabulary

 4th grade & 5th grade

•  reading comprehension skills (inference, cause/effect, compare/contrast) 

• increasing vocabulary

• writing in journals and revising
