E3 Blended Course Syllabus
This is a collaborative class between Mr Szcinski and Ms Lewell, and runs a full year (A/B days). The aim of this class is to support the US History EOC, which you will take in May. You will earn a US History AND an English 3 credit for this course (2 credits).
This class will look a little different than the English 3 block courses offered here at Southside. We only meet every other day, so it's a little slower. We are also doing a couple units out of order from the other groups. Our goal in the English section of this blended course is to provide support to the History content, so we will be focusing on a selection of fiction and non-fiction texts and written assignments that enable us to do so.
Our textbook and programme is centered on the new state-wide adopted text, HMH Into Literature for grade 11. We will be also reading a novel, Dear Martin. Please see here for the list of texts that have been vetted by our Southside English Department.
A rough schedule for the year ahead includes:
Unit 1: Foundations and Encounters: what connects people to certain places? What values and beliefs shape who we are? What does it mean to be a stranger in a strange land? (August-September 2024)
Unit 3: The Individual and Society: how can we be true to ourselves? How do we relate to the world around us? What do we secretly fear? (October-December 2024)
Unit 4: Long Read: Dear Martin (Jan-March 2025) - in support of Standard 5 on the USH side)
Unit 2: Building a Democracy: what does oppression look like? How do we gain our freedom? How can we share power and build alliances? How do we reach our goals? (April-May 2025 - in support of the EOC on the USH side)
Our current unit plan is linked alongside. Please be patient as this page is a living document: I am building the plane while I'm flying it.
Mandated list of materials used in instruction can be found by clicking here. Again, it's a living document that is being built as I go, please be patient.
