ESOL Program Long Range Plan
Students' current levels of English proficiency will be evaluated. Parents will receive a notice regarding this level, the type of ESOL services students will be receiving and the modifications that will be available in the regular classroom.
September through January
Students at all levels of English proficiency will work to increase their language skills in the areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. The ESOL teacher works closely with classroom teachers to ensure the success of ELLs (English Language Learners) in all subject areas. Accommodations are made to make all content accessible to students. Newcomers will be taught using In the USA curriculum provided by the ESOL department. All other students will work on their language development using the Lexia program also provided by the ESOL department. Daily lessons are provided from this program based on their individual needs.
All ELLs will participate in ACCESS testing to determine their current levels in the area of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, as well as their growth in these areas since the previous year. Scores are reported to schools in late May. Students who show proficiency in all four areas will "exit", or graduate from the ESOL program.
ESOL students and their teachers will continue to work towards English proficiency as well as success in all content areas. Newcomers will continue to use In the USA curriculum to learn basic vocabulary needed for conversation and content areas. All other students will continue to work on their language development using the Lexia program to try and reach their yearly goal of moving up four levels. Daily lessons are provided from this program based on their individual needs.
