Help your child become a better reader. Questions to ask your child while reading a fiction text. Who is the main character? What is the setting in the story? Does the setting change? What was the problem in the story and how was it solved? Did the character change during the story? How? How are you like the main character? How are you different? What do you predict will happen next in the story? Why do you think the author chose this title for the story? Do you like the title? Why or why not? Can you think of a different title for the story? Which character from the story would you choose to be your friend? Why? Which part of the story was the most exciting? Did you like the end of the story? Why or why not? Which parts in the story could really happen? Which parts could not really happen?

Help your child become a better reader. Questions to ask your child while reading a nonfiction text. What is the main idea of the text? Can you tell me something that you already know about this topic? What did you learn from reading the text? Are there any words that you do not know what they mean? What are some new words that you learned? Do you have any questions after reading this? Were there any text features that were important? Where could you find out more information about this topic? What questions would you ask the author about this topic? What would be a good title for this text? Can you think of another book that you have read about this topic? How was it similar? How was it different? Did you like the text? Why or why not?

Seven Habits of Good Readers. Good readers and good writers learn habits that help them become strong and fluent. The seven habits are visualizing, activating schema, questioning, inferring, determining importance, monitoring for meaning and synthesizing.

Importance of Daily Reading

Why can't we skip reading tonight? Student A reads 20 minutes each day. This equals 3600 minutes a school year. Student A will read approximately 1,800,000 words. Student B reads 5 minutes each day. This equals 900 minutes a school year. Student B will read approximately 282,000 words. Student C reads 1 minute each day. This equals 180 minutes a school year. Student C will read approximately 8,000 words. By the end of the school year, student A will have read the equivalent of 60 school days. Student B will have read the equivalent of 12 school days. Which student do you expect to be the better reader?
