In this course, students engage in a comprehensive study of the United States Government that begins with an examination of the historical and philosophical foundations that shaped the development of American constitutional democracy. The course emphasizes how these enduring principles continue to sustain and guide democratic society today. Students explore how governmental powers are granted, structured, and distributed across branches and levels of government, and how the system of checks and balances preserves the balance of power and protects against abuse. In addition, students investigate the formation of American political values and the ways in which government functions through individual participation and the policy making process. A thriving democracy depends on informed and engaged citizens who are committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting individual rights. Through the study of the United States Government, students develop the knowledge, skills, and civic understanding necessary to participate thoughtfully and responsibly in American democracy.
