Students are given multiple opportunities to make better choices and meet classroom expectations. When expectations are not met, the following steps may be used to help students reflect on their choices, take responsibility, and make positive changes. Consequences will be determined based on the type, frequency, and severity of the behavior.
Teacher-Student Conversation
The teacher and student will discuss the choice that did not meet expectations, why it was a concern, and how the choice affected the student and others.
Reflection Sheet
The student will complete a yellow reflection sheet to think about their choices and identify ways to make better choices moving forward. The reflection sheet will be sent home for a parent/guardian signature and should be returned to school the following day.
Silent Lunch
The student may be assigned a silent lunch as an opportunity to reflect and reset before returning to regular classroom expectations.
Earning Extra Recess
Students receive 20 minutes of district-required recess each day and have the opportunity to earn an additional 10 minutes of extra recess, for a total of 30 minutes of recess each day. The additional 10 minutes of recess is earned through responsible choices and positive behavior; it is not automatically given. When additional support is needed, students may be asked to meet with the teacher, complete unfinished work, write an apology letter, or complete another appropriate reflection activity during this time.
These steps are intended to help students take responsibility for their actions and make better choices moving forward.
