Course Description

• English Studies 6 is designed to prepare students for College and Career readiness as required by the South Carolina State Standards. The curriculum exposes students to a variety of genres, both literary and informational. Placement Recommendation - Successful completion of grade 5.

Learning Objectives

By the end of English Studies 6, students will be able to:

• Read, comprehend, and analyze a variety of grade-level literary and informational texts.

• Analyze how authors use plot, character, setting, structure, point of view, figurative language, word choice, and other literary elements to develop meaning.

• Determine and analyze themes and central ideas using relevant evidence and supporting details from texts.

• Cite and explain textual evidence to support analysis, inferences, and conclusions.

• Compare, evaluate, and synthesize information and ideas across multiple texts, sources, and media.

• Conduct research by developing questions, locating and evaluating credible sources, determining relevant information, and organizing findings.

• Write clear and organized argumentative, informative/expository, and narrative texts appropriate to purpose and audience.

• Develop writing through planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing while applying grade-level conventions of standard English.

• Use vocabulary, context, word relationships, morphology, and knowledge of language to determine meaning and communicate effectively.

• Participate effectively in collaborative discussions and communicate ideas clearly through speaking, listening, and presentation.

• Apply critical thinking, comprehension, communication, and literacy skills independently across a variety of academic and real-world situations.

These objectives are aligned with the 2024 South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for English Language Arts for Grade 6.

English Studies 6 follows the Greenville County Schools Grade 6 ELA Curriculum Map and the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for English Language Arts. Reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, research, speaking, and listening skills are integrated throughout the year. Pacing may be adjusted as necessary based on student needs, assessment data, and the school calendar.

• Flexible Instructional Days – 14 days throughout the year for reteaching, enrichment, assessment, schedule adjustments, and other instructional needs.

The curriculum progresses through increasingly complex literary and informational texts and provides repeated opportunities for students to analyze texts, support ideas with evidence, develop written responses, conduct research, participate in academic discussion, and apply grade-level language and vocabulary skills.

A = 90-100

• Please check your students’ grades weekly to see how they are performing.

• Students will receive an NHI if they do not turn in an assignment. They will have 5 days after the due date to get it turned in.

• If a student receives below a 50 on an assignment, it will have GFA in the grade book. They will have 5 days to work with the teacher to determine a way to improve the grade.
