Welcome Aboard: Course Overview

Spanish 4 Honors is a semester-long, block-schedule course designed as the bridge from Spanish 1–3 to AP Spanish Language and Culture in the spring. Our typical 90-minute class moves quickly and emphasizes sustained practice, authentic communication, cultural awareness, and increasingly independent use of Spanish.

Our curriculum is guided by the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standard for World Language Proficiency and Greenville County Schools Level 4 curriculum. Señor Rupp has significant flexibility in how those goals are reached, so authentic resources, current issues, literature, film, music, art, conversation, cultural experiences, and AP-style practice may all become part of our journey.

A Note from Señor Rupp

This summer, while traveling through France, Switzerland, and Germany with Eastside students, I found myself in an unfamiliar position: I became the language learner again.

I tried to communicate in French and German—languages I do not speak fluently. Sometimes I understood. Sometimes I did not. I relied on context, gestures, familiar words, and the people around me. Most importantly, I had to be willing to try.

That experience reminded me that learning a language is not about knowing every word or never making a mistake. It is about learning how to communicate. For Spanish 4 Honors, that lesson matters even more: fluency grows when we stop waiting for perfect Spanish and start using the Spanish we have—then stretch it.

This semester, Spanish will not simply be a subject that we study. It will be the language we use to investigate ideas, tell stories, discuss issues, interpret authentic voices, explore cultures, and prepare for AP Spanish. Through Rupp Education Tours, you are no longer beginning travelers. You are becoming embajadores—students who can connect, explain, narrate, react, compare, and increasingly argue a point of view in Spanish.

You will make mistakes here. I expect you to. You will also discover gaps from Spanish 1–3. We will not stop Spanish 4 to repeat three years of courses; instead, we will continuously spiral the language tools you need back into meaningful communication. My job is to challenge you, diagnose what you need, and provide practice and feedback. Your job is to participate, take risks, support your classmates, and keep going.

YOU BELONG ON THIS FLIGHT.
You do not need to remember every rule from Spanish 1–3 on Day 1. You do need to bring what you know, practice what you have forgotten, take risks, and allow yourself and your classmates to grow. We will work hard, think deeply, laugh often, and use Spanish for real purposes.

The goal is not perfect Spanish. The goal is more independent, connected, culturally aware Spanish than you could use yesterday.
