Course Description:

The content of the elementary algebra standards encompasses the real number system; operations involving exponents, and algebraic expressions; relations and functions; writing and solving linear equations; graphs and characteristics of linear equations; and quadratic relationships and functions. Algebra 1 will include instruction using the mathematics process standards, allowing students to engage in problem solving, decision making, critical thinking, and applied learning. Graphing calculators will be an integral part of all instruction.

Assessment/Calculation of Grades:

Students may choose to retake one major assessment per each nine weeks. They must inform the teacher within one school day after receiving the graded assignment. They must come to a tutoring session and retake the test either before or after school within one week.

Student progress is cumulatively assessed each nine weeks in the following areas:

Major Assessments: Tests and Projects 60%

Minor Assessments: (Quizzes, 20% and Homework / Classwork 20%) 40%

Student progress is assessed during each nine-week period over the semester. A student’s progress is reported as a grade based on the South Carolina grade reporting system:

Grade scale and Breakdown:

90 to 100% = A; 80 to 89% = B; 70 to 79% = C; 60 to 69% = D; 0 to 50-59% = partial grade point credit;

below 59 = no GPR credit

This is an EOC course meaning every student will take the End of Course exam given by the state in May. This will account for 20% of his/her final grade.

Major Assessments:

At least three major assessments will be given each nine weeks. Tests will be announced at least three days in advance and review will be done in class before each assessment.

Quizzes:

Quizzes will be given frequently. There will be at least one quiz in each unit. Quizzes will usually be announced one to two days in advance. There may be “pop” quizzes without advanced notice.

Homework:

Daily assignments will be given and checked at the beginning of the next class. Students are expected to show page and problem numbers listed at the top and all necessary work to receive credit. Homework grades will be based on completion. The grades will be 100, 75, 50, 25, or 0.

Warm ups:

Warm up assignments are given at the beginning of most classes. Each day's warm up must include the name of the warm up, the date, all questions unless specifically excluded, and all answers to receive credit. They are worth 20 points per day and will be collected each Friday. If you are absent, you are excused for that day's warm up,

Late Work:

Late work will not be accepted. Assignments must be turned in on the due date. If a student is absent the day an assignment is due, the student will be expected to turn in the assignment when he/she returns to school.

Make-Up Policy:

Any missed work must be made up within 5 school days. If a test has been announced prior to the student’s absence, the student should be prepared to take the test on the first day he/she returns. All missed tests are to be made up before school or after school. It is the responsibility of the student, not the teacher, to make necessary arrangements for make-up work.

Test Re-Take Policy:

Each student will have the opportunity to complete a test re-take for one chapter test per quarter, not to include a semester or final exam. The test re-take will be averaged with the original score to calculate the final grade. Tests will be kept by the teacher and only viewed or discussed within the classroom.

You must decide if you will complete a test re-take and attend at least one tutoring session prior to the Re-take Day. Re-takes for each chapter test will happen on the same day.

Tutoring:

Tutoring will be available Tuesday for Algebra and Thursday for Geometry after school. Upon request, arrangements can be made for tutoring in the morning starting at 8:00. See Mrs. Morgan for a pass.

Classroom Procedures:

Start of class:

When you enter the room, please take your assigned seat as quickly as possible and begin to work on the warm up or task described on the board. Get your calculator or other materials if needed, before you are seated for class. Assignments are checked while you work on the warm up, so you need to be sure you and your assignment are ready for me to come by within the first few minutes. All backpacks and purses need to be placed on the floor.

Calculators:

You should expect to use a calculator every day, so I expect you to have a calculator at your desk at the start of class. If you have your own calculator, it is expected you bring it and use it daily to become comfortable with the necessary key strokes. Many smart phone calculators have all the functions we need, but I will not allow you to use your cell phone during class. If you do not have your own calculator, I have some available for use during class. You will be assigned a calculator number for your use. I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO HOLD ALL STUDENTS AT THE END OF CLASS TO ENSURE ALL CALCULATORS ARE RETURNED!

During Class:

Please be seated at all times in your assigned seat, unless otherwise instructed, to minimize classroom disruptions and distractions. If you need to get a tissue, throw something away, or sharpen your pencil, feel free to complete the task discreetly or wait until an appropriate time.

End of class:

You will work on assigned tasks until the last 2 minutes of class when you may then pack up and put away materials. At that time you may use your phone to take a picture of the homework assignment. If you have borrowed a calculator or other materials, they need to be returned before everyone leaves. Students will not be allowed to line up at the door at the end of class; students must remain in the desk area! I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO HOLD STUDENTS IF PROCEDURES ARE NOT FOLLOWED OR TO ENSURE ALL CALCULATORS ARE RETURNED.

Classroom Expectations:

Come to class prepared. (paper, pencil, book, and homework)

Be seated and working when the tardy bell rings.

Be respectful of yourself and others.

Refrain from eating, drinking, and chewing gum in the classroom. (Clear bottled water is acceptable)

Do your best and ask for help if needed.

All J L Mann policies are to be followed.

Electronic Devices:

Electronic devices should not be used or seen during class unless specifically permitted on a per day basis. No device should be charged in the classroom. Students are permitted to take pictures of homework assignments, pages of their books, or problems on the Promethean Board at the end of class.

Consequences:

1st offense Verbal Warning

2nd offense Parent Contact

3rd and subsequent offenses Teacher Detention

Any major disruptions or repeat disruptions will result in office referrals and/or removal from class.

Student Records:

Student grades will be updated several times a week. If a parent wants to monitor a student’s grades the parents can get access to the districts Parent Portal. There are directions on the J L Mann home page for accessing the Portal.

Attendance/Tardy Policy:

To receive credit, students may not miss more than 10 days in this class. Refer to the Parent-Student Handbook for more details. The following is the tardy policy for J L Mann High School:

Administration will handle any tardies. If a student drives to school, driving privileges may be suspended for tardiness to school.

Tardy 1-5 = Warning

Tardy 6-10 = Detention

Tardy 10 + = Administration discretion

Tardies will be cumulative for the school year.
