Physical Education Teacher & P.E. Dept. Chairperson - Head Football Coach - Assistant Athletic Director - Strength & Conditioning Coach

Hello Wade Hampton school-community... 2018-2019 begins my fifth year at Wade Hampton High School and 24th in education. Each school year brings multiple challenges, hundreds of teachable moments and countless positive memories. Continuing my service to our students and community is paramount and first and foremost on my mind each day when I enter the school building...

But first, a little bit about me...

I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor's degree in Criminology (1992) and a second Bachelor's degree, plus a Master's degree in Physical Education (2001). I came to Wade Hampton High School after serving as the Head Football Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Castleton University in Vermont.

My career in education began in 1996 serving as an adjunct athletic coach (football and basketball) and substitute teacher for my alma mater, Oelwein High School (Iowa) while I attended Graduate School at UNI.

The 2018-2019 academic year marks my twenty-fourth year in education. I've served in multiple assignments as a faculty member, strength and conditioning researcher, strength and conditioning coach and athletic coach (football, basketball and baseball). In K-12 public education, my stops include Oelwein High School (Iowa) and St. Francis High School (Minnesota). As a higher education instructor, I've served as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education at St. Cloud State University (Minnesota), The College of New Jersey (New Jersey) and at Castleton University (Vermont).

In 24 years as a football coach, I've served three stints as a Head Football Coach, four as a Defensive Coordinator and multiple assignments as a position coach at the high school and collegiate levels.

In 2004, I earned my Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification through the NSCA (National Strength & Conditioning Association). As a Strength and Conditioning Coach, I've helped train well over 1200+ student-athletes from all levels (K-12, college and professional), both male and female, and from all sports (Fall, Winter or Spring). During my career I've also assisted with research and authorship of two studies published by the NSCA and multiple peer-reviewed publications within Physical Education and Strength and Conditioning. I continue my research interest in player-coach relationship development, athletic leadership and the Flow Concept and how it can aid coaches in optimally preparing student-athletes for competition.

From 1992 to 2000, I served as a commissioned officer in the United State Army, serving with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. My commission was earned through Army ROTC at the University of Northern Iowa.

During the summer of 2018, I was married on Waikiki Beach, Oahu, Hawaii to my soulmate, best friend and strongest support, Vickie. Our family consists of myself, my wife, Vickie, and our children, Bethanie (19), Allie (17), Callaway (16), two dogs; Gunner and Kinnick, and four cats, Snickers, Puna, Gray Cat, and the other one! In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, exercising our dogs, exercising myself, golfing, traveling, reading, studying history and watching all sports.

As this year begins I continue to follow a personal edict that began over two decades ago as an educator ... "When faced with adversity, find a way - not a way out!"

GO GENERALS - BE GREAT!
