WHHS National Honor Society

National Honor Society (NHS) membership has been the true mark of student achievement for over 100 years, but it goes far beyond a report card. By empowering, championing, and recognizing well-rounded students, NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. 

Eligibility Requirements

At Wade Hampton, students in grades 11–­­12 who have been enrolled at the school for one semester and who have a cumulative GPA of 4.5 or higher are eligible to be considered for membership. These academically eligible students, or candidates, are then evaluated based on the remaining criteria for membership.

Students who meet the GPA eligibility are invited to submit an application, where they will answer questions about their experiences based on the four pillars of NHS:

• Scholarship
  Students are required to maintain a cumulative GPA of 4.5 or higher on the SC uniform grading scale.

• Service
  This involves voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation. Students are required to describe a minimum of 5 hours of service completed within the past two years. More contributions score higher.

• Leadership
  Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. Our NHS chapter is looking for students who have participated in at least one extra-curricular activity during high school and have at least one example of leadership experience. More experiences score higher.

• Character
  The student of good character is cooperative; demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability; shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others; and generally maintains a clean disciplinary record. 

Understanding the Obligations of Membership
Students who accept membership and are inducted into the chapter should be aware of the time and commitment involved with this honor. If you are accepted, you will be expected to attend monthly chapter meetings, and you will be expected to complete a minimum of 20 community service hours during the remainder of the school year.
