Mr. Helms

Originally from Rock Hill, SC, Mr. Helms graduated from Furman University with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education. In his time at Furman he performed in their Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Men's Chorale in addition to being a student conductor for the Symphonic Band and winning the South Carolina MTNA Young Artists Solo Competition on his primary instrument, euphonium.

Mr. Helms has worked with a number of bands in the upstate area including Boiling Springs High School and James F. Byrnes High School and has marched baritone in the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corp. While teaching at Lakeview Middle School, Mr. Helms also acts as a visual technician for Furman University's Paladin Regiment Marching Band.

Mr. Helms is a Highly Qualified teacher.

Philosophy

I believe the study of instrumental music is a vital part of our middle school curriculum and is beneficial for students in many areas of their lives. Learning to play an instrument and being a part of a successful school band fosters discipline, cooperation, self-esteem, creativity, critical thinking, leadership, and personal responsibility. For many students, experience in a middle school band leads to a lifetime of participation in music and the arts, not to mention the scientifically backed research that has demonstrated that involvement in music boosts cognitive abilities and improves test scores.

Goals

· To provide a comprehensive music education experience for all students who demonstrate the aptitude and interest in learning instrumental music

· To benefit the school and community through the public performance of quality music

· To model and encourage the development of strong character traits like personal responsibility, integrity, hard work, and respect for others

· To provide students with a positive group experience where they may grow socially as they learn and help one another succeed in music
