Honors Chemistry

Welcome to Honors Chemistry!

This will be an extremely rigorous course, that delves into a wide variety of Chemistry topics.  It is my hope, to be able to offer AP Chemistry as an option in the near future, so this course must be extremely thorough to prepare students for an AP level course.

Unlike some other CP/Honors courses that cover the exact same material and just change the depth of questions asked, in Chemistry going from a CP course to an Honors course means including 30-40% more additional content that needs to be covered to meet the Honors standard.  As such, we will be moving rapidly through different areas of content, and you the student, will likely need to spend some time outside of class reviewing and studying material to be able to keep up with the pace that we will holding to, so that we can successfully complete the required content.

Honors Chemistry requires effort from students, as you will be expected to take on more, and to do more than will be expected of my CP level students.  

You will be expected to be competent at taking notes quickly and on the fly.  I will be posting some links to the Cornell method for note taking, which I highly suggest you review, as we will not have time in class for students to copy down every single word on a slide before we move on to the next.

You will be expected to be competent with 1, 2, and 3 step algebraic calculations, often framed as dimensional analysis, as we will use it extensively during molar conversions and stoichiometry calculations.  I have a class set of scientific calculators supplied through a Title 1 Grant, but you are welcome to use your own personal calculator, however it must be a separate calculator, it cannot be on a phone, as those are not allowed during school hours.

You should also be familiar with the Metric system, as that is what we will exclusively use in this class, as well as the basic steps of the Scientific Method and how to apply them to laboratory investigations.
