ML (Multilingual Learner) Program:
The ML program addresses the needs of Multilingual Learners and focuses on learning English. Four areas that are components of the program are Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. In order for students to be successful, English language acquisition is essential. My MLP classes provide assistance in the following academic areas: vocabulary development, reading strategies, guided reading practice, reading and writing in content areas, phonics, as well as opportunities to use spoken language.
Students are identified when they are registered in Greenville County Schools and a language other than English is mentioned on their primary home language form.
The WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) Screener is the assessment tool that we use to screen new students who have been identified. In the spring of each academic year, the WIDA ACCESS test is administered to measure language acquisition in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
When students are assessed, depending on their individual scores, they may be served by the MLP teacher. I work with MLs in grades K-5 each week. They are grouped according to their grade and/or proficiency level. Students who are performing well in the classroom are monitored through consultative services.
Communication with Parents:
A parent notification and consent form is sent home at the beginning of the school year informing parents that their child will be participating in the MLP program. Phone calls, emails and conferences are held as needed.
